"I don't see what you're so worried about- They're just midterms-" Fitz said, looking curiously at the trinket in Dex's hand.
"What I'm worried about is the fact that if I don't do well then I'm setting a bad precedent for my siblings, but I haven't had enough time to study for the midterms with everything going on between the Black Swan and the Neverseen that we constantly get wrapped up in."
"It will be fine. The weight of the world doesn't always need to be on you." Fitz took the trinket from Dex's hand and placed it on the table beside the bed on which they currently sat.
"Sometimes it really feels like it does," Dex replied. "I'm the only Technopath in our group. I mean, there's always Tinker, but when was the last time we heard of or from her? And without a Technopath, who can we rely on if the Council decides to bring the Ability Restricter back? And if I'm not there to help, what happens if-"
Fitz pressed a quick kiss to Dex's lips, leaving him bright red. "Breathe. Breathe. That's it. You aren't alone. Yes, Sophie can leave us to do the majority of the work, but that doesn't mean you're the only one. I'm here, aren't I? And Keefe's always willing to help. And Tam, and Linh, and Marella, and Maruca. Heck, even Stina would slow down if she saw that you really needed help. You're not alone."
Fitz picked the gadget back up. "And the fact that you can make this even remotely resemble a human electronic device that you know nothing about? Incredible. Never underestimate yourself."
"Thanks," Dex swallowed, and -if possible- turned even more red.
"Are you trying to recreate that thing Foster is always fiddling with?" A voice asked from the door.
Dex and Fitz looked up simultaneously to find Keefe leaning against the doorframe looking between Dex and Fitz as if he were trying to figure something strange out.
"Maaaaaaaybeeee," Dex said, glaring at the machinery. "but I can't seem to reroute the wiring in the right way to make it do anything." Keefe chuckled, and walked in.
"Not trying to be rude or anything, but what exactly are you doing in my room?" Fitz asked, peering curiously at Keefe, who just smirked.
"Well, Forklenator wanted me to find Foster. No idea why he was looking for our Moonlark, but I sort of figured she'd be here with you while you do your Fitzphie brain-train sessions."
"Well, she's not here. And if you'll excuse me, I was in the process of helping Dex with-"
Keefe rolled his eyes, and sat on the chair beside Fitz's bed. "What are you up to, anyway? I didn't know you two hung out."
"None of your business-" Fitz started, but Keefe cut him off,
"You're blushing-"
"I am not-" Fitz gave a startled, slightly nervous laugh.
"I'm an Empath," He pointed out bluntly. "One way or another I'll figure out why you two are so flustered,"
"I-" Dex's face turned bright pink.
Keefe raised his eyebrows. Fitz glared at him. Keefe giggled. Fitz choked. Dex just stared on, very confused. Keefe smirked. Uh oh.
"So... You and Fitz, huh?" Keefe continued to smirk, and turned towards Dex.
"I- You- FITZ-"
"I didn't- I didn't tell him."
"He didn't," Keefe assured. "I sent him a picture of the two of you that I painted a few days ago, I couldn't think of anything else to paint, and I waited for his reaction. He recoiled, ended the connection, choked and started blushing. I got my answer. As I said, I'm an Empath. You can't hide emotions from an Empath."
And that's when things went downhill- well, more downhill anyway. Tam walked into the room.
"What is going on here?" Tam scowled at Keefe.
"I- we- I-" Dex spluttered.
"You don't like me, do you? Why are you even dating me if you like them better?" Keefe leapt up and grabbed his wrist.
"Woah- Hey- I- That's not what happened. We were- I was teasing them- Gah- That makes it sound worse," For the first time, words failed Keefe.
"Hey, Tam. That's not what happened. He was teasing Dex and I about us being together- We weren't- He's not- He's not dating us." Fitz stepped up, placing a hand on Tam's back to try comforting him.
Tam shivered, and almost backed away slightly at Fitz's touch, but stood still and let himself be comforted. Fitz rubbed his back, and the two were silent, however Dex and Keefe could tell that they were talking telepathically. However, after a moment, Fitz interrupted the far too awkward silence.
"HEY- You're Not a coward. You have every right to feel that way. You don't get to disrespect yourself like that."
"Why do you even care?" Tam asked, wiping as discreetly as possible at his eyes.
"Because you deserve happiness."
"I agree," Keefe said from Tam's other shoulder.
"It doesn't matter," Tam mumbled.
"Yes," Fitz whispered, "it does," He placed his mouth against Tam's.
"I- Sorry- Oh my god- Sorry- I didn't mean to- Sorry," Fitz exclaimed at the same time as Keefe shouted,
"Hey- Rude!" Everyone went silent, waiting for his inevitable anger. Of course he'd be upset, his best friend just kissed his boyfriend, be it accident or not. "Why does he get a kiss and I don't?"
Fitz just stared at him. "I- I didn't- I didn't mean to- Why? I- I don't know?"
"Well, I knew you before he ever did," Keefe giggled at his own joke, then leaned over Tam's shoulder and kissed Fitz.
"Sorry," Dex said, "but what exactly is going on?" He was a little amused, and very confused.
"Hmm..." Keefe said, smirking. "Is little Dex feeling left out?"
"I- That's Not what I said-"
"But is it true?"
"I- Why do you want to know?"
"Because," Keefe said in a sing-song voice. "Then," He paused. "I can do this," Keefe leaned over him, and kissed him.
"Ok, as much as that was nice, what is actually going on?"
"Um..."
"Something?"
Tam sat beside Dex, Fitz sitting next to Keefe. Then, he got a mischievious glint in his eye.
"What're you up to?" Fitz asked him.
Keefe whispered something in his ear, to which Fitz smirked. Then, as if on cue, the two started chanting,
"Kiss! Kiss! Kiss! Kiss!"
Dex looked at Tam, who shrugged.
"I mean, this day can't possibly get any weirder," So Tam pulled Dex by the collar of his shirt, and hesitantly placed his lips over Dex's.
"AWWW! SO CUTE!!!!!!!!" Somebody squealed from the door. The four spun around to face the door, expecting to find Biana, but instead they found people who were almost worse.
Standing in the doorway were,
"Mom?! Edaline?! What are you doing here?!" Dex shouted, glaring at them, his face glowing bright red.
