It felt as if my grandmother was the closest thing I had to family–the only one who understood who I was as a person.

Key word, 'was'.

Now, I don't know what I am.

Now, I don't know who to trust.

Now, I realize my entire life has been a lie.

But that is not how this story will begin.

__________

In my grandmother's hand was a pocket watch. At 13 years old nothing made sense. I had been in and out of consciousness at night when trying to sleep. And each time I would wake up somewhere different. My head would be pounding, I'd be dizzy as I stood up from the hard ground. I would look around and see a completely different world.

"Where the hell am I this time?" I would ask myself. "What is this? The 1800s?"

It wasn't until I had asked my grandmother about it that I received answers.

Knowing my mother was an outcast made it easier. Born with the ability to create life out of nothing, she was enrolled into Nevermore Academy almost as soon as her parents had noticed something was off. Besides, my grandmother was an outcast as well, and it was quite clear there was a long line of others.

My father, however, was not. In truth, I have no idea who his family was. Whenever I brought it up as a child he would snap at me. So, I dropped the subject entirely.

"This," my grandmother smiled, "is a pocket watch. It's a family heirloom. A very long time ago one of our ancestors had the ability to travel through time. Before she passed, she made it clear that she wanted this watch passed on to the next descendant able to manipulate time."

Her face turned stern, and I can still hear the gravity of her voice as she peered at me through her glasses. "Do not let this out of your sight. Who knows what would happen if it landed in the wrong hands. Only with this will you be able to control when you travel. All you need to do is press the dial and think about where you want to go. But, be careful, my dear. Your actions have consequences, and that applies in the past just as much as it applies in the present."
