My uncle tightened his grip on my throat. The blade piercing more into my flesh. Seething the pain, I wasn't even scared. If this was my time, I would embrace Valhalla. At least then I wouldn't have to deal with the hell I was enveloped in.
"I think you care more then you let on, she's a good ride isn't she," he bellowed, spit from his lips splattering against my skin. Leaving a boiling, itchy sensation. His whole being made my skin crawl.
"Uncle!" My mind snapped out of it when the voice of my older brother was heard. Calder stepped beside Hvitserk, his face dirty and pale but he was standing there. How long had he been locked up?
"Calder!" I croaked and my brain just then realized my predicament.
"I should have known you would be involved in this treachery. You slimy bastard," my uncle gritted his teeth. He wasn't in control of us anymore. My father could no longer stand as his puppet with a dagger between his eyes.
"Melti did not know. Now release her or I'll slam a blade in between your eyes and you can join our dirt bag father." Calder warned and looking around, the people dropped there blades. Windvymere would not fight for my uncle. If Calder was alive, he was now Jarl. My uncle realized his standing and shoved me to the ground. My palms catching me but mud made of blood and dirt splattered my face.
"I want a fight. One on one." He called out to Calder as I stood carefully. Selby ran to me, lending a hand as I held a hand to my neck. Calder held himself tall, and stood up against my uncle.
"I'm not the one who deserves that fight." He turned to me, then to Ivar. Who stood a bit behind me with his brothers. Ivar nodded in his direction. People grabbed my uncle, Calder striding over to me. He placed a gentle hand on my face, looking briefly at my neck.
"You okay?" I nodded but a single tear ran down my eye. He hugged me tightly and I missed his embrace. He was the comfort I had craved for a long time.
"Where is Erik?" I asked, and Calder's head hung low.
"I do not know, unfortunately once father imprisoned me. I lost track of Erik," the pure sorrow and disappointment shone on his face. Calder always looked after us. As much as he could. I never blamed him for the abuse I had endured. Strictly pinning that on our Uncle. But he hurt as much as we did, and now with Erik no where to be found. We had a job to do.
"Mel?" I looked up at him, he could see the sadness on my face. I felt so lost, like I knew nothing. I didn't know about Ivar and Calder planning this attack, I don't know where Erik is, I didn't know anything. Or did Calder even know about this? Looking back at Ivar my head got instantly foggy. He was so unpredictable, I thought I had an idea what went on in that sick head of his. But this just clarified I was in the dark.
"Let's find Erik, that's all I'm worried about," Calder smiled weakly at me. I knew there was something he wasn't tell me. But at this time. We had a little brother to worry about. And my fear of the worst was creeping into the back of my thoughts.
"Okay," he waved down a few of the men that were cleaning the chaos, "take two or three men and scour the town. Every inch. We must find Erik," the men nodded at there orders and I stood watching him. He looked much like our father, but his actions were all so different. He would lead Windvymere will but I had no idea the deal he made with The Boneless. Hvitserk sauntered up to us, swinging an arm over my shoulder.
"Happy to see me?" He asked with a cheeky grin. I smiled weakly against his embrace. He noticed my discomfort and released me. Blood plastered my skin, my right side of my neck sticky and warm. The blood already cracked and dry. Ivar and Ubbe joined us, my brother shaking the brothers hands.
"Thank you for keeping my sister safe," he acknowledged. How long has they planned this? Ubbe chuckled, "she didn't make it easy. She has a strong.... personality," I glared at the ground,
"How long were you all planning this?" I asked anger prominent in my voice. Ivar looked bored but perked up at my voice.
"Since we left you in Kattegat," Calder claimed, and it all made sense. Ivar didn't make a deal with my father, he made a deal with Calder. I was also my brothers bargaining chip?
"And I couldn't have been filled in on this endeavour?" I seethed, since I lived in fear for months while in Kattegat.
"The less people to know the better," Ivar coldly added, his blue eyes piercing into my soul.
"I needed you out of Windvymere Melti, father was eager to wed you off to anyone since you can't..." he caught himself and I raged. He thought Ivar was better then the next bidder? Be treated me like a broken prize. Like I was something to flaunt and to use as his scape goat. I watched him slaughter women, and deface men. I was angry with everyone. Happy that Calder had freed Windvymere from fathers rule. But angry he did it by the sacrifice of his family.
"I'm going to find Erik," I stated, scared of what would leave my mouth if I stayed any longer.
