I walked into the P.I. office the next morning at 7:55am. I looked at saw Denise sitting at her desk and I smiled.
"Wow, early and everything." Denise said and I just shrugged.
"Make a good first impression. I even brought donuts." I said and set the box on Denise's desk.
"You're the best niece ever." She said and I laughed. She handed me a cup of coffee and I sighed.
"So, where do I set up?" I asked and she pointed at the desk across from her. I walked over and set my purse on the floor under the desk and Denise came over to help me get set up with a log in. Cassie came walking in a few minutes after 8 and smiled at me.
"Welcome to the team." She said.
"Thanks for the job." I said and she nodded.
"No problem. We could always use the help on cases and everything. Also Jenny will be stopping in later." Cassie said saying the last part mostly to Denise.
"She bringing him?" Denise asked. I looked at her oddly as she made a weird googly eyed face.
"Is she okay?" I asked Cassie.
"We have a new sheriff in town and Denise has a crush." Cassie said and I laughed.
"Is he interested?" I asked Denise and she laughed.
"Too young for me sweetie." Denise said and I sighed.
"Robbing the cradle..." I said shaking my head and we all laughed. "Wait you said he is the new Sheriff, do you guys work with law enforcement. I thought P.I.'s and law enforcement hated each other." I said and Cassie chuckled.
"Usually yes but Jenny Hoyt...as in Hoyt and Dewell, the P.I. firm. She was a deputy, had some issues, lost her badge but she got it back about a year ago. So she left here but we all work closely together." Cassie explained and I nodded.
"Sorry I ask so many questions." I said.
"Hey, don't do that. You're fine. You're new to town and working everything out." Denise said and I sighed.
"I never thought at this age I would be starting over." I said.
"It's not easy." Cassie said and I nodded.
Denise and Cassie sat with me and we went over some open cases and things that were going on in the office. Around 10am 2 people came walking in and I looked up. There was a man and woman.
"Hey Jenny." Cassie said and she smiled and then looked at me.
"Well you must be Blake." She said extending her hand to me.
"Yeah, nice to meet you." I said shaking her hand.
"Same here. Welcome to Big Sky." Jenny said and I smiled. I then saw the guy, I could see why Denise had a crush. Easy to have a crush on this man. He was the typical law enforcement type. He looked at Denise first.
"Chicken parm was amazing Denise my love." He said, Denise giggled and Jenny looked at me with a smirk and rolled her eyes. I just smiled shaking my head.
"You made him your chicken parm?!" I asked in shock and she looked at me.
"I have a dish for you at home. I forgot it." Denise said and I shook my head.
"Showing who you love more." I said and she smiled and gave me a small wink. The man turned and looked at me.
"I don't think I have seen you around here before." He said. His Texan accent was showing even though he was trying to hide it.
"Beau Arlen, this is my niece Blake. She just moved to town." Denise said and Beau smiled at me and extended his hand.
"Sheriff Beau Arlen, also new to town." He said and I shook his hand.
"Nice to meet you Sheriff." I said.
"Beau is fine." He said and I smiled. Everyone was silent for a minute.
"Okay well I'm going to go file these closed cases." I said and walked away towards the file cabinet. I had to get away from Beau. Nothing against him but my history with Sheriff's was never a good one. The Sheriff in Louisiana never did anything to help me with Jax.
I heard a cellphone ring and I knew it was mine. I walked out to my purse where it was.
"Sorry guys." I said and grabbed the phone.
"Hello?" I answered.
"So you just leave." I heard the gruff voice say.
"How did you get this new number?" I asked and he chuckled.
"Sweetie, I will always be able to find you." Jax said. I quickly hung up. Denise saw my face.
"Hey...was that him?" Denise asked and I nodded.
"Yeah, but I changed my number." I said and she sighed.
"Well time to change again." Denise said and they girls nodded.
"Blake...are you in some sort of trouble?" Beau asked and I sighed.
"Just an overbearing ex-husband." I said and he groaned.
"Okay well block the number he called you from." Beau said and I did. "I also would like you to come down to the police station and file a restraining order." Beau said and I scoffed.
"Yeah sure." I said and went to walk away.
"Blake, I know you don't know us all very well but a restraining order would be smart." Jenny said. I sighed and pulled down the shoulder of my shirt showing by my collar bone. There was a circle scar.
"A restraining order got me shot 4 years ago." I said. Everyone wasn't sure what to do or say. "Yeah so I know you think they work but I have no faith. He has no idea where I am and he wont be finding me." I said and walked back to the filing cabinet.
***DENISE POV***
I watched Blake walk away and sighed.
"I will try and get her to file one." I said to Beau as he watched Blake work.
"I don't want to force her, she clearly has some things to work through. I mean the ex-husband shot her and she stayed." Beau said.
"I met this guy when they got married and a few times since. He was a piece of work but you couldn't tell Blake that. She thought she could change him." I said and the girls groaned.
"One of those..." Cassie said and I nodded.
"Listen, can we all just maybe keep our eye on her?" I asked and everyone nodded. Beau grabbed Blake's phone from her desk when she wasn't looking.
"What are you doing?!" Jenny asked.
"Shh." Beau said. Once he looked something up and he took a picture of it with his phone. "I got the number he called from. I'm going to trace it. Make sure he isn't near here." Beau said. As he placed the phone back on Blake's desk she came walking in.
***NORMAL POV***
"Hey so we are all heading to the local bar tonight. You should join us." Jenny said and Cassie nodded. I smiled.
"Yeah, that actually sounds like a good time. I will need to follow someone there." I said and Cassie smiled.
"Follow me. We will go after work." Cassie said.
"Sounds good." I said.
"You joining us Beau?" Jenny asked and he looked at me and gave me a small smile.
"I think I will." Beau said and I felt a small heat rise in my cheeks.
No Blake, not him, not anyone. You need to focus on you. You clearly don't need to get mixed in with the sheriff, my mind was just screaming this over and over at me.
