"I THOUGHT YOU SAID

smoking pot changes the way your brain processes information." belly told conrad as she walked outside for a late night swim.
"so does your cell phone."
"i'm surprised delilah hasn't kicked your butt for it yet."
"me too, belly." he replied.

delilah always hated when people smoked. she already knew conrad did, but she left him be and didn't say anything about it.

belly dived into the water and conrad watched her. she came back up and stared at conrad.

"you said marijuana messes with white matter."
"do you even know what white matter is?" conrad asked.
"you said o-our brains are still developing and that-"
"god, do you memorize every single thing that i've ever said?"
"get over yourself." the girl scoffed. "does delilah even know? where is she anyway?"
"she does, and she's inside with jeremiah."

she nodded and went back underwater.

"i mean, conrad, you're the one that said that-that smoking's dumb and that real athletes don't put shit in their bodies."
"i said a lot of stuff, and i'm not an athlete anymore, so..."
"well, i still think you should quit."
"...what do you give me if i do?"
"nothing, i think you should quit for yourself. or if not, for delilah. you know she hates it, and she loves you, so."

she continued swimming around in the pool as conrad kept smoking more puffs.

"hey, why are you considering this debutante thing?"
"i dont know. i mean, it's not like i have anything else going on."
"but it's not you. don't let my mom make you her little doll just because she never had a daughter. i told delilah she should but for different reasons."
"i don't mind it. i mean, sometimes i wish i was her daughter."
"you're better off with laurel, trust me."
belly scoffed, "why are you acting so different?"
"i'm not." he let out another puff.
"i know you. i mean, something's going on. just... just tell me."
"i haven't even told delilah and i tell her everything. what makes you think i'd tell you?"
"first bonfire of the summer!" steven shouted as the four other teens walked out of the door.

"all right, we're totally taking my car. you're not driving." jeremiah said while steven laughed.
"come on, man we're leaving, you ready?" steven said.
"can i come too?" belly asked.
"uh, no. the moms are getting everything set up for your movie night."
"see ya." conrad said to belly.

he got up from the pool as steven made a joke about conrad being slow.

the boy walked over to his shoes, putting them on and then putting his arms around delilah's shoulders.

"have fun with the moms!" steven shouted at belly.

the teens walked to jeremiah's car and they all got in. jeremiah in the drivers seat, steven in the passenger seat, and then delilah, mason and conrad in the back. conrad was in the middle feeling the tension between the two twins.

once they got to the bonfire, delilah quickly got out of the car and walked onto the beach. she met up with her friend she met last summer.

"hey girl!" shayla said as she gave her a hug.
"hey! how are you?"
"good, how are you? you look so gorgeous, as always."
"i'm good, i'm good. and me? look at you." they both laughed.
"soooo, what's new in the world of delilah?"
the girl laughed "um, nothing much, to be honest. susanna wants me to be a debutante."
"you should! i am too this year. we can do it together."
"i told conrad i'd think about it."
"oooo conrad. i know i'm friends with nicole, but i always shipped you with conrad. so how's it been going with him? any kissing yet?"
"no, we aren't dating. we're just friends. plus. i don't think i could date him after he dated nicole."
"well, i'm sure she wouldn't mind if you dated him."
"yeah, well, look at them right now."
