DELILAH WOKE UP

to a sleeping conrad. he had her wrapped in his arms and his head was on hers.

the girl sighed and carefully got up, trying not to wake her sleeping friend.

she successfully got out of bed and went to her closet to grab a pair of clothes for the day. she decided on a black long sleeved shirt with a white skirt.

she left her hair down in its wavy state and put her burks on to go next door.

delilah placed a blanket over the sleeping boy and walked out of her room, gently closing the door behind her.

she walked downstairs and quickly made herself a bagel and ate it before she left her house.

when she made it next door to the fishers she was greeted with jeremiah making breakfast for his family and guests.

"do we really have to physically sit for our portraits? cant she just like, look at a picture on her phone or something? okay get out." jeremiah shooed steven out.
"what? why?" he laughed.
"hey guys." delilah said as she walked in the kitchen.
"hey, dells." steven said.
"hey, deli, looking beautiful as always." jeremiah said twirling her around.
she laughed "thanks, jere bear."
"hi, delilah. she needs to see you in the flesh in order to capture your essence. while you're still young and full of hope." laurel said, delilah's mom agreeing

the group laughed.

"her words." alice said.
"well, conrad does not have hope. he's hopeless, but my hangover smoothie- it cures all."
"can you please just hurry up?" the girl heard from the room over.

she walked in and saw conrad lying on the couch.

"i thought you were still sleeping."
"no, while you were making your breakfast i woke up and climbed through the window to come back."
"mm."

she made him sit up and sat down where his head was, it now being in the girls lap. she ran her fingers through conrad's hair and he groaned.

"that feels good."
"just go back to bed, conrad. alright, seriously steven, get out."
"oh, come on."
"this is a delicate science and your heavy breathing is gonna break the yolk."
"ok ok ok."
"she hasn't painted you since you were little. i think it would be nice to have these portraits for when you're older."
"no, when i'm older i'm sure there'll be like, holograms or something i can watch of myself, you know?" steven said.

jeremiah started the blender which startled conrad. he gently laid his head back down on delilah's lap and continued to let her play with his hair.

"just sit for your portraits. i don't see conrad or delilah complaining." alice told the boys.
"conrad will complain when he's conscious, and delilah is a people pleaser she complains for nothing. hey, here." he said handing conrad his 'hangover smoothie'
"thank you." he mumbled.
"come on, man. get your ass up, all right? i can't be late for my first day of work."
"we won't, we're good." jeremiah told steven.
"come on, man." he said slapping jeremiah's behind.
"those old country club boomers are gonna tip me so hard, man, they won't know what hit 'em."
"oh!"
"steven, i swear." laurel said.
"what?"
"come on, laurel. my boys gotta get that bread."
"thank you."

delilah laughed a little and conrad smiled up at her.

"your laugh is soothing."
"thank you?" she questioned whether it was a compliment or not.
"good morning." jeremiah told the brunette who walked in the kitchen.
"belly, where have you been?" she stayed quiet.
"um, cereal?" jere asked her
"yeah, hit me."

jeremiah started making belly's cereal when susanna walked downstairs with a big smile.

"oh my god, belly and delilah are gonna be debutantes!"
"like, my sister? that thing right there?"
"i second that." everyone heard as mason walked into the kitchen.
"shut up, cretin." belly told her brother.
"you didn't tell me you were going to be a debutante?" conrad looked up at the blonde.
"i only did because...."
"okay, this is going to be so much fun! just you wait."
"of that." delilah smiled.
"cause it's fun?"
"no, because of the smile on your moms face."
"there's the tea, the auction, the ball, of course, the rehearsal. i gotta write all this down." she gasped. "we need to go shopping."

alice, belly and delilah started laughing.

"this sounds... expensive."
"oh, don't worry about that." alice said.
"yeah, belly's stuff is on me. it was my idea after all to have the girls be in the ball, and we still need to style you for your book party, so."
"belly, are you sure you want to do this? it doesn't seem very you."
"it's not. it isn't you either, deli." conrad said.
"conrad, could you please be a little more supportive? now, which of you are going to be the escorts for the girls to the ball?"
"not me, i went last year." conrad said.
"yeah, and i swore off balls." jere said.

delilah let out a laugh. so did steven.

"the dances."
"wow, guys. stop fighting over us. um, i'm not going with either of you. i'm going to find my own date."
"wikipedia says debutante balls require instruction in morals and social etiquette."
"oh, laur, we all know wikipedia is crap." delilah giggled.
"i'm going for a swim." conrad said getting up from the couch.

he kissed delilah's hand and walked out of the house.

"eh, belly could use some etiquette. i think delilah is fine already." steven egged on his sister.
"no offense, you guys, but i don't feel like a country club is the best place to teach belly about morals."
"laur, times have changed. there's a girl debbing this season, she's bringing her girlfriend as her escort, and the club was fine with it." susanna told her.
"how very progressive of them." laur replied.
"here you go, belly button." he handed belly her cereal.
"well, hurry up! we have shopping to do!" alice said.
"well, it wasn't like i was getting much work done anyway."
"woop woop! shopping time!" delilah jumped up and gave susanna and the other moms a hug.

the girls went through lots of different stores and picked out a few dresses for them to wear for the deb events.

belly walked out in an outfit with a big hat. the girls all laughed and shook their heads while susanna jokingly slapped the hat.

once they found a few outfits they paid for them and left the store.

"ok, they're called 'fascinators' and all the girls will be wearing them." susanna pointed the others to a window outside of a shop with a bunch of funny looking hats.
"seriously?" laurel asked.
"seriously."
"i don't know about this." belly said.
"come on." alice said running into the store pulling her daughter along.

they picked out their fascinators and then went to try on their dresses. sure they were wedding dresses but they were what all the girls wore to debutante balls anyway.

"no." all the girls said to a dress belly came out of the dressing room twirling in.
"you were right on this one." laurel said.
"i know." susanna laughed.

a few dresses later the girls found one for belly that was simple but very beautiful.

now it was delilah's turn. she tried on way more dresses than the 15 year old did, but when she came out in her final picked out dress her mother almost cried.

"that one's so beautiful, delilah..." susanna put her hands over her mouth.
"i love that one." alice said looking at the dress her daughter had on.
"i really like it." delilah said.
"i think it's the one." susanna said. "ugh, conrad will die when he sees you in this dress. i think i'm going to make him be your escort. you guys would look so cute together."
"i'll ask him myself, anna. we can't force him though.."
"oh, i will if he says no, honey. he's my son after all." the girls laughed.
"let's go buy the dresses."
