ELAIN ABERNATHY
THREE YEARS AGO:

* ˚ ✦

"So...you going?" Noah asked as he looked at Elain. She gave him a look that said 'do you even have to ask? You already know the answer. Fuck no.'

"Come on..." He begged and Elain laughed as she shook her head. For years now, Noah had been trying to convince her to go to the devil's night party, but had no such luck.

Elain's family was very big on images. Everyone and everything had to be perfect all of the time. You had to be perfect at something. If it wasn't school, it was sports, and if it wasn't that then it was looks.

"Heads up Rika is coming, don't talk about the party." She whispered as Rika approached them. Elain put a smile on as she saw her friend.

Rika and Elain had met in kindergarten and had been inseparable ever since. Elain was older, but it didn't matter to either of them.

"Noah? Elain?" Rika asked as she fell back, leaning against the wall next to the lockers. "Do either of you have a date for Winterfest?"

Noah scrunched up his face. "That's like two months away, Rika."

"I know, I'm getting in while the getting's good." She said and Elain rolled her eyes. "What about you, Lany? Do you have a date?"

"I have someone in mind." Elain said with a smile as she checked to make sure she had everything for class before putting it in her book bag.

Noah slammed his locker shut and lead the way down the hallway and the two girls both followed. "So you're asking me on a date then?" He teased in his cocky voice, looking at Rika. "I knew you always wanted me."

Rika and Elain both exchanged a look before rolling their eyes. "Could you make this easier, please?" She asked.

"Why don't you just go with Elain?" Noah suggested and Rika crinkled her face.

"No, why would I do that?" Elain smacked her over the head. Rude. "Oww, I don't mean it like that! I'm just saying that's not the point of the dance." Alright, fair. She'd give her that one.

Winterfest was a dance like Sadie Hawkins. Girls ask guys, not the other way around or any other way. Elain honestly wasn't a big fan of it, but the school always went really big with it. Plus, there was the after party which was usually the best part of the year, depending on who was throwing it.

Students scurried around them, rushing to their classes, and Rika held the strap of her bag on her shoulder as she grabbed Noah's arm, stopping him. Elain barely stopped in time to keep from running into Noah and she stumbled on her feet.
