"So how did you two meet?"
"What's the story?"
"You guys are just adorable together!"
"How is it, dating our Hyeju?"
"I don't know how they think I'm going to respond to that," Chaewon muttered to Hyeju when her great-aunt finally made her way back to the food table. "Oh, you know, Hyeju. Just mediocre,"
"It's a bunch of dumb, meaningless questions for a bunch of people I barely know," Hyeju replied. "You don't have to stress about them,"
"Why is your family so big?" Chaewon complained under her breath, tucking herself into Hyeju's side. "Can't we be an antisocial couple?"
"Yes we can," Hyeju took her hand and led her through the throngs of people and into the kitchen in the back, looking for food before they claimed to be too tired to keep socializing.
"Hyeju! You must come say hi to Grandma!" Her mother waved to the two of them and Hyeju reluctantly approached her family members. Her Grandmother was short, with hair that was almost entirely grey, and dressed in a similar sweater to Chaewon. She was a very cute old woman, and Hyeju had always been her favorite. She let go of Chaewon and hugged her Grandmother with a smile when the old woman gasped in surprise at her arrival.
"Grandma," Hyeju bowed slightly. "This is my girlfriend, her name is Chaewon Park,"
Her Grandmother squinted slightly, inspecting Chaewon. "Why, she is beautiful!"
Chaewon blushed furiously and smiled. "T-thank you. I feel very lucky to be dating your granddaughter,"
"Treat her well. I know she can be a bit grumpy sometimes, but she's got a good heart," Her Grandmother squeezed Chaewon's hands and then pinched Hyeju's cheek. Hyeju laughed slightly in embarrassment.
"She's wonderful. She's got to put up with me too," Chaewon told her Grandmother earnestly.
"I'd say we're an even match," Hyeju agreed.
"I must say, I'm surprised we didn't hear about you two getting together sooner," Her mother commented.
Chaewon shot her a look, and Hyeju brought her closer by the small of her waist. "I guess I wanted to keep Chaewon to myself a little longer,"
Chaewon rested her head on Hyeju's shoulder and the family "awwed", and then Hyeju hesitantly kissed her forehead.
She pretended she didn't notice how warm it was.
Once her Grandma was being entertained by one of her younger cousins, Hyeju took Chaewon to get a drink. It was crowded, and they ended up nearly pressed up against each other and the wall with their cups of punch.
"Going well?" Hyeju affirmed in her ear, and Chaewon nodded slightly. Her hands went to Hyeju's waist and she leaned up to whisper.
"Your sister is watching us,"
Hyeju didn't have to turn around and look, she wasn't surprised in the slightest. "Come here," She murmured, and Chaewon just blinked when Hyeju tugged her closer and leaned down till her lips were almost brushing Chaewon's neck. To anyone else it'd look like she was whispering some sweet nothing into her girlfriend's ear.
"Why are you so warm?" She muttered.
"Shut up," Chaewon replied weakly.
"Just pretend like I said something funny,"
"I do that every time you try to make a joke,"
"God, Chaewon, help me out here," Hyeju pleaded. Chaewon sighed and then Hyeju felt her give the most half-hearted laugh in the world. "You are terrible at this,"
