"Hey loser!" Kalani came out of nowhere slamming my locker shut.
"Hey! I wasn't done getting all my stuff out," I yell standing dumbfounded in the middle of center hall. Somehow I had gotten lucky when locker assignments were sent out because my locker stood smack dab in the center of the school, hence the name center hall. Lucas had freaked when he saw my locker number and went on about how jealous he was.
"It's the first day you don't need to bring anything home. And what the hell happened to my shirt," Kalani scoffed yanking my bookbag strap and revealing the ripped shirt.
"I bumped into someone and half the buttons fell off, I'm sorry" I apologize.
"Good thing for you the people in this place dress half naked anyway. And whatever, I kind of like it that way better," she shrugs it off walking a few steps ahead dragging me down the hall. I stumble behind her short black heeled boots and knee high socks. Kalani's black dress along with her straightened brunette hair and sun tanned skin make her look dark and brooding in contrast with the warm summer day. I finally loosen myself from her grip when we near the exit of the school.
"My mom just texted me, she's parked by the field," Kalani informs me and I follow by her closely. Walking leisurely down the side of the school, we pass by groups of people all talking loudly and about whatever not worrying who might overhear. Every new group we pass by, Kalani is showered with hi's and hey's and even a couple cat whistles. All I get is a few stares.
After we surpass what the Dillon people call 'the hill', Kalani and I walk side by side down the winding path to the field. As we get closer I see that the field is in fact a football field. I could have guessed that though. From my wonderful tour of the school, I had learned that football was very important to everyone in this town, even a skinny kid that danced and had probably never even touched a football. From afar, looking down at the field it looks as if little blue and yellow dots are speeding across like bees around a flower. But with every step forward, a dot becomes a person. With their matching blue and yellow pinnies and black shorts, the football players all look the exact same.
"The legendary Dillon Panthers!" Kalani exclaims loudly in a deep announcer type voice as we walk by the on-going practice.
"Lookin' mighty fine today K" one of them winks back at Kalani as he jogs slowly past us.
"I hate that kid," Kalani growls and I laugh at her annoyance.
We pass directly under the yellow post things that look like forks, when something catches my eye. I notice one of the dots. He is sprinting towards us alongside four other guys who appear to be much bigger than he is. Without a helmet on he's easily recognizable. It also helps that I haven't forgotten about him all day.
"Hey," I tap Kalani's arm incessantly.
"What?" she asks looking over at me.
"Who is that right there?" I say pointing at the mystery boy I had run into earlier.
"Which one?" she asks squinting to try and see better.
