From behind her door, I could feel the thump of her heartbeat, anxiety mingled with the scent of her perfume.
"What brings you here? Was it Nani who sent you?" She said cautiously, and I imagined her brows knitted together in confusion as she tried to figure out why I was there.
"No, I came by myself."
"Did you? Why?"
" Please allow me to explain."
After what seemed like minutes, her locks turned and the door slowly opened. Her expression was befuddled, and her eyes were unreadable. My inner wolf felt a longing for her, which I tried to suppress.
Even with the magically infused fairy necklace, the pull towards her was as strong as ever.As I entered her house, the atmosphere was suffocating and awkward. The air was fragrant with vanilla and lavender, and the soft cackling of her heater filled the room with warmth.
" You can have a seat if you want," She sat down on her couch, folding her hands in anticipation. She kept a good distance between us, and her anxiety was out of control.
I couldn't blame her, I had made my presence purposely off-putting to her. All the anger and loathing cloaked her aura.
" I'm fine with standing."
"What exactly do you want to tell me? You mentioned I was familiar with the last time we spoke. Is that the case?"
" It is."
I stuffed my hands into my pockets, uneasy with the direction of this conversation. Normally, I was cool and collected, but her piercing stare made me nervous.
Her unreadable expression turned accusatory.
" Does this explain why I've been getting migraines and having these dreams? It's as if wherever I go, all I see is you. You've clearly marked me. "Did you leave a mark on me?"
"I was attempting to break our connection."
"What is the connection?"
"I felt an almost addictive pull towards you from the moment we met. You completely upended our way of life here, upsetting the established order. But I'm sure you felt it from the first time we met."
She opened her mouth to say something but quickly shut it again.
"I went to a witch doctor, more of a powerful fairy, to try to break our connection, but we're still connected by spirit. I had no idea you'd be on the receiving end of pain."
" So you just took it upon yourself not to tell me this?" Anger radiated in waves, replacing anxiety.
"How could you possibly make such a decision on your own?"
"Are you blind?" I spat with venom. " I'm getting married to Nani, and I can't just stop and drop everything because I have feelings for someone! I'm mated for life as a wolf, and you don't belong in my world."
She shook her head in disbelief as she laughed bitterly.
"This is simply unbelievable; I cannot believe it. 'Keiran, you're not on the verge of lunacy,' I thought to myself. Having wolf dreams, transforming into a wolf, and suffering from migraines. Everything is linked. I can't even go on dates with Ahiga because you've infected my mind like a parasite that refuses to leave. Is Nani aware?"
"She doesn't, and I intend to keep it that way."
"The last thing I want to do is jeopardize your precious relationship."
My wolf whimpered in sadness as I felt a slab of guilt slices through my heart.
But we could never be together, and I would fight my wolf to the death to stop it.
