Chapter 4: Partying is clearly my favorite hobby"A girlfriend for FIVE YEARS? I can't compete with that!"
"Why would you compete in the first place?" Jo looks flabbergasted. She and I are on the couch watching TV. It's already ten in the evening, and I'm a bit sleepy. "You guys are literally just fake dating."
To be fair, she has a point. But dating for five years and ending the relationship must have been hard. I've dated Daniel for three years and am already having a difficult time getting over him, so how did Colter do it? "Hey, what's up with the whole act earlier with Colter?" I give Jo a weird look.
Jo giggles. "My friends just want information. Do you have any idea how many sophomores find him cute?"
"You have a boyfriend!" I stop myself from asking about her so-called friends. Last time I checked, she usually hung out with her best friend Troy. Recently I've been seeing her with a group of girls though.
She looks away, but she doesn't say anything. "Also, I'm not totally competing — it's just that getting over someone you dated for five years sounds really rough. I get that they broke up a year ago, but there's no way he's really over her." A year from now, will I be over Daniel? Can I be able to look at him in the eye and tell him I don't love him anymore?
Jo turns the television off using the remote. She leans towards me with a smirk. "You wanna know what I think?"
"What?"
"Maybe that's what he's benefiting from your fake relationship," she suggests. "Maybe his parents don't think he's over his ex yet, which is why you have to play his girlfriend in front of his family!"
I can only frown at her, but I don't say anything to disagree with her. I guess it kind of makes sense. "I'm not even sure what to wear tomorrow..." it makes me sick how I'm nervous, "I don't even know why this whole thing's eating me up when we aren't legit dating."
"Because you're a people pleaser."
My phone beeps. I take it while shooting a stern look at Jo, who just shrugs and gets up from the couch, heading inside her room.
Colter: dinner tomorrow is canceled
Surprisingly, I release a breath of relief .
Margery: I'm sorry to hear that
Colter: why? it's good news
Maybe. As much as I hate it, his family dinner is the only thing that's kept me sane throughout the week.
Margery: Hey there's a party tomorrow at Brennan's place, do you want to go?
Colter: if you want me to
Does he want to? I read his text over and over again for a minute. Maybe I sound too needy.
Ugh! Who cares what he thinks?
Margery: No it's fine. Just thought maybe you'd enjoy it.
Colter: u think i like parties?
I smile to myself.
Margery: Yeah I definitely thought it'd be your scene
Margery: Hey it's Friday night. Do you want to go out or something?
Colter: no thanks
Margery: Alright
Colter: aren't you tired from school and cheer?
