Chapter 12: A talk in the airport

"What do you mean we're flying to Pittsburgh!? Are you out of your mind???" I'm still finishing up my fries when he turns the engine off and makes his big announcement. "You're not serious, right? Please tell me you're just joking."

Colter's already out of the car. "It's not that expensive. And the next flight is in an hour. You got your ID with you right? Let's see if there are first class tickets left—"

"You've officially lost it!" I shut the car door, run up to him, and grab his arm, pulse racing. I nearly drop my purse. He turns, eyebrows raised quizzically. "Colter, we have school tomorrow!"

He shoots me a challenging grin. "We'll be back before you know it."

"This is insane." Even though I'm shaking my head, my initial fear begins to wane. Adrenaline pumps through the rest of my body. My heart is pounding, and I can hear it. "Fuck. I'm going to get on a plane for the first time. Fuck. FUCK."

Colter looks at me straight in the eye. "You want to do this, right?"

My excitement wears off. "What if the plane crashes?"

He doesn't miss a beat. "Then we die."

Death. "Huh," I don't take my eyes off him. "Alright, let's go."

He gives me a strict look. "We're not dying. We still got so much to do, remember?"

I release a dramatic and enthusiastic nod. "Oh, right. You still have to win Worlds and I still have to find my passion."

There's a look of surprise written on his face. "Worlds," he smiles firmly, "you remember."

"You bet," I return, snickering. "And I'm going to be there during your tournament, whether you like it or not."

I don't miss the small smile his mouth forms.

Stepping inside an airport is a new experience for me. I've seen multiple airport scenes in movies and shows, but being in an airport with the knowledge that I'm going to get on a plane makes me giddy.

"Sit down, cheerleader." Colter grabs my arm, chuckling. I sit beside him, my legs fidgeting a little.

Unexpectedly, he ruffles my hair playfully. I stare at him, and although I'm giving him one of my annoyed looks, my heart is pounding.

Not because of the plane, or because I'm a step closer to figuring out if I want to have anything to do with aviation, but because it's so unlike Colter to express this side of him. I'm usually met with the more reserved side of himself — the version who forcefully laughs at 90% of my jokes, the guy who usually nods without saying anything throughout conversations, the boy who poises himself a know-it-all during debates...

"Heyyy," a sloppy female voice makes our heads turn up in unison. She's got a cute yellow top on matched with a short white skirt. Her big blue eyes are fixed on Colter, acting as if I don't exist.

Behind her, three blonde girls giggle with their phones pulled out. "Deja vu." I head Colter mutter underneath his breath, looking down at his shoes.

It takes me several seconds to grasp what he means before chuckling. He's referring to freshman year — Chloe McKinley with Zara, Hailey, and I trailing behind her.
