Chapter 6: Meeting my fake in laws

I wake up with a loud throbbing in my head, and immediately know I drank way too much yesterday night at the club.

The pink colors seen in every angle of the room tells me I'm at Zara's place. I close my eyes and slowly sit upright with a yawn, sniffing the familiar smell of beer in the atmosphere.

Right next to me is Zara, snoring loudly with her hair all over the place. We're both on her bed, while Hailey on the other hand has crashed on the magenta rug made of silk, her mouth hanging wide open.

My mouth forms a small smile before my hands start to wander around, checking for the familiar leather touch of my purse. I end up finding it on the floor, just inches away from Hailey's curled up figure.

The first thing I pull out is my phone where I receive nothing but 2 missed calls from Colter.

He hasn't even responded to my last text, nor did he send me any messages. He just straight up called 2 times at midnight.

The image of Colter only reminds me of that one moment we shared with each other yesterday morning before classes started where I genuinely made him smile for the first time. It felt good to make someone so robot-like smile.

That's when I remember Daniel and Faye at lunch yesterday.

Ugh. My head goes back to hurting as I find myself shutting my eyes and lapsing into the darkness.

Hours later, Zara orders two large boxes of pizza for lunch. While waiting, Hailey calls her parents and Zara takes a shower.

Thankfully, despite the existing headache, I can already bring myself to call Jo.

"Heyyy," my voice is a little sleepy, but I know she gets the message. "I'm still at Zara's. How are you?"

"I'm at work," I hear a few noises from her end. "You're safe, right?"

I laugh a little too loudly. "As always, Jo. What did you have for breakfast? I made you a shit ton of spaghetti before I left for the clu-bar yesterday so you could just heat it up earlier."

She hesitates for a moment before responding. "I, uh, actually ate it all earlier."

"Really? That's great!"

"Yeah, yeah— hey, I got to go to work. By the way, did you know Colter called me yesterday?"

Huh. "Uh, why?"

"He asked if you were home."

That's weird. "Did he want something?" I try to picture the probability of him wanting to take me out shopping for a presentable outfit to show in front of his parents. The edges of my mouth curl up at the scenario.

"He said he called you and you weren't answering," I can feel Jo grinning. "I told him you were out with your friends drinking and that you not replying was normal. Your so-called boyfriend sounded kinda worried."

Something in my chest tightens. It's not the butterflies-in-my-stomach kind of feeling, but rather the kind of feeling that pumps into your blood at the thought of someone unusual who might care about you. "He did?" then I remember the conversation we had yesterday and sigh, "relax. He just wants me to make sure I'm still alive for Sunday dinner. Have fun at the coffee shop!"

"Yeah, right."

Zara's driver takes Hailey and I back to our places before nighttime since Zara's still not sober enough to drive.

Before I was dropped off, Hailey questioned if Colter was home. I kept forgetting the whole made-up story about Colter living in the apartment across from mine. As usual, I told her he wasn't.
