Everyone constantly says, "Time heals all wounds." but I've discovered that it's untrue. Generally speaking, at least. The actual process is fairly complex when you break it down. First, you have the moment that the wound is initially inflicted. Then the blood cells begin to coagulate around the open wound after a certain period of time in an effort to close it off, and stop the blood loss. Next comes the challenging part. The blood eventually dries out and creates a scab, in an attempt by our bodies to defend ourselves. To protect us from anything that can jeopardize the healing process.
Unfortunately, things aren't always so cut and dry. Sometimes something may happen that reopens the scab, forcing us to restart the healing process until the scab ultimately goes away. The problem? The likelihood of a scar increases when the scab is repeatedly opened. leaving a permanent mark on our bodies that will never fade. We'll first be reminded of what happened every time we see the scar. However, the more time that goes by, the more accustomed we are to having said scar. Over time we will either forget it is there, or if we do see it we won't focus on it as much. We may heal, but a lot of the time we also scar. I'm sure you can see where I am going with this.
It's funny how basic human functions such as a wound healing can apply to our lives in significant ways, such as heartbreaks. I'm not just talking about things involving relationships, there are some things that truly can break one's heart and it has nothing to do with romance. For Carol Aird...now she's had some heartbreaks in life. First, we have her and Abby. The two best friends who fell in love with each other when that wasn't considered acceptable. Then we have their downfall.
Carols, at the time, husband Harge found out, and he was not happy to say the least. They were forced apart, and that was one of the first things that cracked in Carol and Harges marriage. He no longer trusted Carol to be around other women. After a bit of time, and Carol "proving" she loved him, he let her have a little more freedom. She was able to become friends with Abby again. The two women will always have some sort of love for each other, but they know that they aren't meant to be together romantically. She was Carol's first, but not her forever. And Abby also knew that Carol wasn't her future. She later found out that a certain redhead she met at a diner was her future.
Eventually, I came along into Carol's life. The moment I saw her my breath was practically taken away. We made small talk, then went our separate ways, only to later run into each other again. We made more small talk, then we decided to make plans to see each other again. Looking back on it, it truly was fate that we were brought together.
I still remember the day well, how could I not? The entire time my face was red, because there was something about the way she looked into my eyes that felt so intimate. It's a cliche, but it was like she was looking into my soul. I felt vulnerable that day, but with her, it wasn't a bad feeling. She made me feel comfortable...safe. It was weird at first, feeling that way with someone I had just met, but after a while, it was no longer weird. It was a rather welcomed feeling. Still is.
Not long after we met, Harge started to get suspicious again. By that point I knew their history, and how he treated her when she was with Abby. The only difference now is that Carol wasn't going to let him do the same thing to her a second time. Was it a little more complicated now because they had Rindy? Yes, but that didn't mean she was going to back down. The day she met me, she knew she had met the one. That's not just something someone should have to give up, and she certainly wasn't going to.
The two of them filed for divorce, and for custody of Rindy. Harge decided he was going to fight for full custody, because he didn't want her to be exposed to "our ways', but after a very long, and tiring fight, Carol managed to get split custody. That night, we were able to take Rindy home with us. Carol and I decided to take her to dinner that night, and once we got home, we had a nice, peaceful movie night.
That was six months ago. Today it's just Carol and I celebrating New Years Eve together. Abby took Rindy for us for the night, because she wanted to have some one on one time with her "favorite niece"... totally not so Carol and I could celebrate alone. Of course I was all for our quiet alone time, but Carol had her own plan.
Carol knew that a woman can't marry another woman, not in this decade, but that didn't stop her from buying a ring. She had been planning this since she won the custody trial, Which is the real reason Abby has Rindy tonight.
It's almost midnight, and Carol and I are currently laying on the couch in the living room, looking out the window while soft music plays in the background. Carol plays with my hair as I lay in between her legs, stroking the side of her thigh. Most of our day was similar to this, with the occasional piano playing, and dancing...and a very exciting morning, if you know what I mean.
"Can you believe the year is really over? I thought it would never end." Carol chuckles, taking a sp of her beer. "It didn't feel like it would, did it? The year was difficult, but I wouldn't change a thing, because this... this is the happiest I think I've ever been. I have a daughter who is the cutest, and sweetest thing ever, I have my best friend back, and I have you. I truly don't think I could have done all of this without you by my side, so thank you." Turning my head to look at her, I place a soft kiss along her jaw before resting my head back on her shoulder.
"You don't need to thank me, you deserve the world. You think you couldn't do it without me, but you could. You're the strongest woman I know Carol. You fight for what you want, and for what you believe in. It's one of the things that made me fall in love with you. Me being able to stand by you was just a bonus." At that, I feel her grab my chin and turn my head to pull my lips to hers in a soft, passionate kiss. After pulling away, she whispers against my lips "I love you, you know that right?" Connecting our lips for a short moment again before answering "I Love you too Carol."
"Come on, we only have one more minute before midnight. Dance with my darling." I get off of her chest, watching her get up before reaching a hand out for me to take. The two of us move into the center of the room before beginning to dance. My hands wrapped around her neck, while hers are around my waist.
Taking a step away, she moves to have me turn in her arms, letting me rest my back against her front. Looking at the clock, there's only fifteen more seconds until the beginning of the new year. I feel her pull away before I turn around, just to be met with her going down on one knee, and pulling out a ring.
"You, my precious angel. You have been by my side throughout everything, and you have never left. You held me when I cried, you helped me win my daughter back, you love my daughter like your own. You are...my angel, flung out of space. You are the person I see my future being with. You are the only person I want to love like this, the only person I could love like this. I know that we can't actually get married, not now anyways, but that doesn't matter. Because the day that we can, I will drive us to the courthouse, and marry you on the spot. So...will you marry me?"
I don't even have to think for a moment before saying yes, and practically jumping into her arms, both of us in tears. She places her hand against my cheek before placing her lips on mine. After a minute, I pull away just long enough to whisper "You better keep your promise Carol, because I cannot wait to marry you."
