Chapter 10: Two of Us
1 Year Ago:
Kai actually felt before he saw Tyson's pain, their Bond flaring up, bringing back memories he would rather forget. He knew he couldn't deal with his pain, and help Tyson, so he made an executive decision and switched off their Bond. Dragoon and Dranzer had taught it to them during one of their rare meetups. But, they had also warned that they couldn't switch it off until it was really necessary - if they did, they could end up endangering their lives, because the Bond was a part of both of their lives.
So Kai knew the risk he was taking. But he also knew it was necessary. He shut his eyes, and mentally switched the Bond off.
"Like a Vampire switching off their humanity, huh?" Tyson had asked with a cheeky grin when their bitbeasts had explained it to them.
Tyson.
Without paying attention to the heavy loss of Tyson's mind's tether to his own, Kai opened his eyes and saw Tyson clutching the phone, stuttering, "How?" His whole body was shaking, and tears were falling on their own from his eyes. Kai moved forward, taking the phone from Tyson and holding it up to his own ears.
"This is Kai Hiwatari speaking, what happened?" He asked, his "Future CEO" mode slipping through.
"It would be better to explain it in person, but we fear that you and your teammates, especially Mr. Kinomiya, are in danger. A few security guards will be assigned to his house in a few minutes. And we advise you to go straight to his house from wherever you are now. Everything will be explained in detail when I and my partner get there."
Kai was at a loss. But he knew couldn't think about anything else but Tyson's safety at that moment. So, he gave a quick affirmation that he would do as he was advised, and quickly ended the call. His eyes had never left Tyson throughout the whole call, and Tyson hadn't moved a bit when he had been talking, except for the tremors wracking his body.
'He's in shock,' his mind provided. Dealing with deaths wasn't new to Kai, but he knew how hard it was. And no one should have to go through the loss of losing three people at the same time.
Kai... didn't know what to do. No, that wasn't right - he knew what to do. He knew that he should comfort Tyson, get him home and to safety, and then tell everyone else the news. But -
Kai didn't know how to do it. How do you comfort your best friend after this? How do you tell them that everything was going to be fine?
Kai took a deep breath, pushing away his own emotions on the matter. He could grieve Gramps, Mr. Dickenson, and even Hiro later. Now, he had a mission. Slowly, he put his arms around Tyson, and Tyson immediately came out of his stupor, turning and burying his head into Kai's shoulder, completely leaning his weight on Kai.
Kai slowly brought them both to the ground, Tyson's anguished sobs echoing all around them, making him close his eyes, his own tears slowly falling.
"They - They're," Tyson stuttered, trying and failing to form words.
"I know," Kai murmured, holding him tighter.
"They're GONE! How - How could th- they-"
How could they leave me behind? Was the unvoiced question. How could they do this to me? To us?
"They didn't want to, Tyson. It's not their fault."
"I know! I know! But-"
Tyson dissolved into sobs again, unable to talk.
