"Never in my HISTORY of coaching." Southgate yelled, a vein in his head pulsing. "Have I ever seen such a squad." The England team stood in a line, all looking at the floor. Lucky for them, they were still in the locker room and not out on pitch. Southgate had asked for some extra time before going out, citing "team difficulties".
"I thought maybe, you all would straighten up. And actually be serious about the World Cup this year. But I guess I asked for too much.
"It was YOUR idea to make that group chat, and look what it's caused you! Late night drunk parties! I let that slide. But this! What do I even call this?"
Although he didn't say it, they all knew what he was talking about. All eyes fell on Mason and Declan. Mason stood, emotionless. Declan trembled. How had his dream turned into a nightmare so fast?
"What was you guys' plan? Stay in here and fuck like animals while your teammates went out on the pitch? Like a bunch of fucking fa-" Southgate caught himself. "What do you have to say for yourselves?"
Neither Mason nor Declan said anything.
"Of course. You two are suspended for indecency. Effective immediately. And don't expect to come back any time soon." Southgate turned to leave, but stopped in his tracks.
"No."
Southgate turned to find Harry Kane, who had stepped forward, between him and Mason & Declan.
"Excuse me?"
"As team captain," Harry Kane said firmly, "I have complete confidence in my players, in my men, in my friends. And I will not let you do this to them, just because they fell in love.
"Football is about being a team, isn't it? It's about working together. It's about uniting people. It's not about forcing people to stay apart, or hide, because they don't fit your mold. And I think I speak for every player in this room when I say that we will not stand for this."
The other players nodded.
"If you suspend Mason and Declan," Harry said simply. "You suspend all of us."
Southgate opened his mouth to speak, but Harry wasn't done.
"No, I will not negotiate." Harry said, folding his arms. "Go ahead, suspend all of us!"
"I'm sure the press would love to hear that the England team was suspended, by their own manager, because two of its players are gay." Jack said boldly. "Because trust me, I'll tell them."
"Thank you, Jack." Harry said, turning back to give him a small smile. Then he turned back to Southgate, smile gone. "So what will it be, Southgate?"
Declan and Mason remained silent. They knew it would be a bad idea to talk. This was Harry's place to speak. He was the only one who could challenge their manager.
Southgate looked like he had a lot to say. But all he said was, "You win. Now get out of my sight. Go play."
The team looked ready to celebrate when Kane steadied them with a hand. "Let's go play."
And play they did.
