Sophie stared into Keefe's beautiful blue eyes, and felt his breath on her cheeks. She felt his arms around her waist, sheltering her from the fall. His hair was all messed up, Sophie mentally chuckled at that.
She quickly pushed herself off, realizing that she had been straddling Keefe. Actually straddling him. She wondered why he hadn't made a move to get away from her, as she would have done the same if she was Keefe. He was probably feeling annoyed at her now for making him fall.
That stupid log.
"S-sorry. Branch was in the way." Don't stutter, you'll give yourself away.
"Are you okay?" Keefe asked almost immediately. Even after she had just sent him hurtling down a hill, he had asked her whether she was okay. The pure kindness almost made tears form.
"Yeah. Are you?" Sophie eyed him. Keefe seemed fine, other than the dirty clothes. Speaking of which, her clothes were probably ruined now too. Biana would have a fit at her mud stains and leafy hair.
"Yup. I'm fully intact. As you can see, every bit of awesomeness is here."
The patch of wood they were standing in had many trees and coverage, making it hard for Sophie to see where she was. She squinted, but all she saw was black, and an outline of a boy who was literally glowing. How could Keefe look good in pitch black?
"C'mon Keefe, let's go. You tagged me." Sophie started to walk away, until he caught her hand, making her stop mid-stride.
"Wait, Foster. Can we just stay here for a little while?" Keefe must've misread her emotions because he seemed to think she needed convincing. "It's just, I left, and I didn't think I'd come back. But now that I am back, I've barely seen you."
Sophie's heart ached at the sincerity in Keefe's words. They wrapped around her like a warm hug, and she made sure to extra-remember them in her already photographic memory. She hadn't really thought Keefe was missing her so much, it's not like they hadn't seen each other. Just not alone. Like they were now.
She panicked for a second, thinking he may want to talk about the note he left. Hopefully not, Sophie wasn't ready for that talk to happen. She would probably end up getting her heart broken. Keefe would probably tell her he saw her as a friend. Or worse, a sister.
"Okay." Sophie breathed out when Keefe released her hand. She stumbled over to what looked like a fallen log and sat on it rather haphazardly. Sophie was wondering if Keefe meant what he wrote in his letter, about caring about her a lot. It was probably a sister thing, but Ro had made it sound like he liked her, and she had let her mind run a bit wild while Keefe had been gone.
When Sophie had been anxiously awaiting their reunion, she had made a silent declaration. That she had been feeling something very strong. That was definitely thinking in the moment. Yup. That's what it was. Now she wasn't quite sure whether she had a small crush, or something very big. But then again, Sophie had never felt like this around Fitz.
The log moved a bit, and she registered another body sitting next to her. Sophie blushed, and Keefe smirked. He had been picking up on her emotions this entire time, of course. His empathy wasn't in the best place right then, so he wasn't about to let himself completely trust what he was getting from Foster. What if she was thinking what he was reading? That would make things a whole lot more complicated.
"So . . ." Keefe addressed, dragging out the word.
"I don't know."
"There's no snow."
Sophie smiled. He was going down.
"Follow the flow."
"That was a low blow."
