Morty sat on the couch, feeling the rough texture of the material between his fingers, focusing on it to keep his mind from flying off the rails. A portal opened in front of him, the sound ringing in his ears as Snowball slowly wobbled through without his suit, a small letter in his mouth.

"Hey boy, what's going on?" Morty questioned softly as he ran his fingers through the panting dog's fur.

Snowball dropped the small note on top of his left foot and he picked it up as he sat on the ground, scratching the dog. Morty felt the insides of Snowball's legs, feeling the dogs fever after seeing his dry nose and dull eyes. Morty slowly unfolded the note reading the scribbled words.

'Morty, I have decided to come to you in my last minutes . You were always my one true friend and master, Morty. I love you. "

Morty's eyes slightly widened and he pulled Snowball onto his lap, caressing the dog for the last time. Snowball panted harshly, trying to pull air into his small lungs. Morty saw the life slowly draining from the black beady eyes he loves so much.

Rick heard the commotion and came downstairs, finding Morty and Snowball on the floor. Morty softly scratched behind Snowball's ears, he used to love that. Snowball slowly closed his eyes for the last time as his breathing stopped, Morty held his small fuzzy chin in his hand, still rubbing over his head with tears welling up in his eyes.

"Love you too, Buddy." Morty whispered, pulling the small corpse of his dog into his chest, feeling the warmth and fur beneath his hands for the last time.

Morty stared down at the tail laying on his jean, trying to not remember the look in Snowball's eyes as the light drained out of them... The way he breathed unevenly and heavily.

"Morty, I'm sorry, Kid " Rick muttered as he sat down next to Morty

Morty nodded curtly as his head hung low. The heat draining from the small body in his arms. Morty felt the same way as Snowball on the inside, dead... Lifeless and dark.

"If you hadn't given in to Jerry and just left - left him as a normal dog, he might've still been alive... I'd have more time with him." Morty said lowly, still staring at his legs.

"Are you blaming his death on me?" Rick exclaimed incredulously as he stood up from beside Morty, glaring at him from above.

"No, Rick, for once something bad in my- in my life happened and YOU weren't the cause of it."

Morty stood up, walking to the backyard with the white bundle in his arm before gently laying him down as he dug a hole, preparing himself to lower the dog into the ground to rot away.

'People think that death sometimes comes quickly or unexpectedly, but the truth is that we die a little bit more every day, rotting away in a flesh prison until the last bit of life that's left in us fades away, taking our memories with us where we go into the afterlife. ' Morty thought as he slowly put the dog into the dark hole, rubbing his ears for the last time before throwing the dirt onto him.

Morty stared at the small strands of white fur peaking through some of the ground, he slowly sat down on his knees, not throwing ground all over the small, almost covered body in the ground anymore. Morty let out a shaky sob before tears fell onto the ground as he gripped the strands of grass and dirt, dirt and rocks harshly poking and scraping at his skin as he pressed his hands into a tight fist.. Rick came out, sighing as he stood behind him, rubbing his back.

"What's the use of li-life if we all die mercilessly?!" He whispered in a monotone voice as the tears suddenly stopped, but there was something in the way Morty said those words that made Rick's blood run cold in his veins.
