Imagine having to move out at a young age? No one to keep in touch with? Having to start a new leaf with no choice in the matter? That was the life of a young Kassandra Palmer. Kassandra was the daughter of two wealthy CEOS. Her father wanted Kassandra to follow in his footsteps and be the next CEO of his business, and his wife was the same way. But Kassandra didn't want any of that! She wanted to become a freelance artist. But she was always told that "hobbies don't pay the bills" or other things along the lines. Kassandra was also quite a rebel in her youth, always skipping classes, sneaking out to go to parties, and flunking her grades badly to the point where she had to REPEAT senior year. One night, after a heated argument with her parents about her being forced into being CEO at her father's company, she had enough. So once everyone was asleep, she got out of bed, packed her bags, and took her college fund and any money that was laying around and ran away from home.
She started off on the streets for a while, in the means of laying low until she could find a nice house. A week passed until she found herself in Willow Creek. It was a small neighborhood, nothing like her hometown where it was all business. The people seemed nice and she eventually bought a small house. Sure it was nothing fancy, but that was just how Kassandra wanted it to be. She went on to buy some furniture and supplies for her to start her new life. She started by enrolling herself in a new school, improving her grades and staying for classes more often. It continued to doing homework almost every night, and doing some artwork along the side where she would sell her works to collectors in the area for a quick buck. In the beginning, she'd make about $50-$100 for her artwork, but as she improved, more money came flowing in. Kassandra was typically a loner, but with this fresh start, it pushed her into making new friends. Her first being a woman named Claire.
Claire was already a young adult when they met, but the two clicked almost instantly. Kassandra wasn't open about her previous life to anyone in the beginning, as she worried about having her parents find out about her whereabouts. So she kept quiet for the time being. Claire would come over everyday after school to either help Kassandra with any difficult homework, or to simply be a good neighbor and hang out. She became Kassandra's mentor and helped her become more independent with things like cooking and cleaning. As days passed, Kassandra would regularly invite Claire over and make the best dishes whether it'd be something like as simple as grilled cheese or fish tacos. Their friendship grew more and more. One night, Claire asked if Kassandra had made any friends at school. Kassandra had never thought of such a thing as she never had any friends at her old school. She was honest and told Claire that she's never really bothered. From that day forward, Claire would ask Kassandra every day after school if she had made any friends, in which Kassandra would tell her no. At one point, the two had a mild bickering during brunch one afternoon. This led Kassandra to storm out of her house and spend some time at the park.
Kassandra strolled around the outdoors, thinking about what could help her calm down. Suddenly, she spotted some chess tables. There were a few people focused on the game, this brought back fond memories of her time in the chess club at her old school. So she sat at one of the tables by herself and practiced on some of her gaming strategies. Soon, she became deeply focused on the game and forgot all about her argument with Claire. Her concentration was broken when a voice said "Is this seat taken?" Kassandra looked up and saw a young black girl around her age. "Uhhhh no. Wanna join?" She asked awkwardly, to which the other girl sat in the chair across from her. Things were quiet for a moment before the girl struck up a conversation. She introduced herself as Karlie and she went to the same school as Kassandra. "Wait a second...Aren't you the girl who wrote an entire essay on gay rights?" Kassandra asked, in which Karlie happily replied that it was indeed her. Before you know it, the two had a full blown conversation while enjoying a game of chess. Their game spiraled into sunset. Kassandra was shocked to realize that she finally found someone her age to talk to. The two exchanged phone numbers and parted way. Promising to keep in touch.
On her way home, Kassandra realized that Claire was right, she wouldn't be around forever and she simply wanted Kassandra to have more friends in her life. Reluctant, she called Claire to apologize and tell her the good news. They arranged their next get together and moved on from their argument. That night, Kassandra was having trouble figuring out what to paint. But something inside of her suddenly lit a spark. Without hesitation, she pulled out a medium sized canvas and began to paint. She didn't focus on how late it was, she just painted and painted. By the time she was finished, it was almost 5:00 in the morning. She stepped back from the canvas and smiled. What she had painted was a portrait of Karlie, by memory at least. The portrait depicted Karlie wearing a bright angel halo on her head with a glowing aura surrounding her. Almost as if she was an angel from heaven. Kassandra would have admired her latest creation more, but she had to attend school. She quickly washed herself off from hours worth of painting, skipped breakfast, and made her way to school.
This would only be the beginning....
