Calamitous Intervention
Chapter One - Prologue
A green-haired witch backflipped onto a cliff holding a staff, glaring up at a large, imposing figure. The figure was a huge purple snake with horns and yellow glowing eyes. "Foolish child! I could swallow you whole!" it yelled, before hissing at her.
"Do not underestimate me, Gildersnake, for I am the Good Witch Azura, warrior of peace!" The witch replied, her hair blowing back and forth. She then immediately dropped to one knee, holding her staff like a rocket launcher. "Now eat this, sucka!"
The witch's staff glowed, launching blasts of fire that struck the snake and knocked it back, making it cry out. "NO! My only weakness! Dying!"
"And that's the end!" A fourteen-year-old Latina girl said, smiling innocently while holding a doll of Azura and a live snake. Her name is Luz Noceda. In front of her were her mother Camila and Principal Hal. She had gotten into trouble once again and, as a result, she ended up in the principal's office.
"The end of what?" Camila replied, not fully understanding the story her daughter had just told them.
"My book report," Luz said. "I think I knocked it out of the park."
"Your book report is why you're in here," the principal told her, pointing to the door, showing screaming students running by with snakes biting their heads. This was the result of one of Luz's experiments gone wrong.
"Oh, so that's where the backup snakes were," Luz said.
"And what were you going to do with this?" her mother asked, picking up a bundle of fireworks tied together with rope. She was concerned for her daughter's safety with dangerous equipment like that.
Luz frowned before muttering and looking down. "That was for the act three closer..."
"Mija," Camila stated, walking up to her, "I love your creativity, but it's gotten out of hand. Do you remember why you were in the principal's office the last three times?"
Two weeks ago, Luz was at an audition for Romeo and Juliet, holding a spork. "O happy dagger, give me death!" On the stage, she stabbed it into her chest before tearing the front of her outfit, making several sausages fall out. The other kids on the stage ran away screaming, ruining the scene.
At another point in time, Luz was attaching a pigeon head onto a squirrel's body, with the label "Baby Griffin" below it. "Now for the final anatomically correct touch: spider breath."
She opened the model's beak, and spiders flooded out, crawling all over her and the classroom. This caused a commotion, as everybody panicked and screamed. At another moment, she was a part of cheerleader tryouts and a student did a backflip, impressing almost everybody.
"You think that's an impressive trick?" Luz cut in. "Take a look at this."
She turned around, showing her eyelids inside out and squishing them. "Bleep bloop bleep!" In response, the other girls screamed at this and ran away from her, while others watched in disgust.
Camila continued, pulling something out of her purse. "We all love that you express yourself, but if you can't learn to separate fantasy from reality, you may need to spend the summer here." She handed Luz a pamphlet for Reality Check Summer Camp.
