Calamitous Intervention

Chapter One - Prologue

A green-haired witch holding a staff leaped onto a cliff, skidding back as she glared up at a large, imposing monster. Before her stood a huge purple snake with horns and glowing yellow eyes. "Foolish child! I could swallow you whole!" it yelled, hissing and snarling at her from above.

"Do not underestimate me, Gildersnake, for I am the Good Witch Azura, warrior of peace!" The witch replied, her luscious hair blowing back and forth. With little delay, she then immediately dropped to one knee, holding her staff like a rocket launcher. "Now eat this, sucka!" she yelled.

The witch's staff glowed orange, repeatedly firing blasts of fire that struck the snake and knocked it back, making it cry out in pain. "NO! My only weakness! Dying!" it wailed in defeat.

"And that's the end!" A fifteen-year-old Latina girl named Luz Noceda finished as she smiled, holding a doll of Azura and a live snake. In front of her were her mother, Camila, and Principal Hal. She had gotten into trouble once again, and, as a result, ended up in the principal's office.

"The end of what?" Camila replied, not fully understanding her daughter's story.

"My book report," Luz said. "I think I knocked it out of the park."

"Your book report is why you're in here," the principal firmly reminded her as he pointed to the office door, its window showing terrified students running around the halls, who struggled to get some snakes off their heads. Whether Luz wanted to see it or not, these were the consequences of one of her experiments.

"Oh, so that's where the backup snakes were," Luz realized.

"And what were you going to do with this?" her mother asked, picking up a bundle of fireworks tied together with rope. She was concerned for her daughter's safety if she was carrying around dangerous equipment like that.

Luz frowned before muttering and looking down. "That was for the act three closer..."

"Mija, I love your creativity, but it's gotten out of hand," Camila stated, walking up to her daughter and kneeling in front of her. "Do you remember why you were in the principal's office the last three times?"

Luz remembered when she auditioned for Romeo and Juliet two weeks ago. "O, happy dagger, give me death!" she shouted on stage, holding a spork right before stabbing it into her chest and tearing up her shirt, spilling sausages to represent fake blood. The other kids on the stage ran away screaming, ruining the scene and promptly causing chaos amongst the audience.

Even earlier, Luz wanted to impress her class for show-and-tell by attaching a pigeon head to a squirrel's body, with the label 'Baby Griffin' below it. "Now for the final anatomically correct touch: spider breath!" she proudly boasted right before opening the model's beak.

As she did, spiders quickly flooded out and crawled all over her and the whole classroom. Everybody understandably panicked and screamed as they ran away from her, causing a huge commotion. At another moment, she was a part of cheerleader tryouts, and a student did a backflip, impressing almost everybody.

"You think that's an impressive trick?" Luz cut in smugly. "Take a look at this."

She turned around, showing her eyelids inside out and squishing them. "Bleep, bloop, bleep!" Not impressed like Luz wished, the other girls screamed at the sight of her and ran away from her, while others watched in disgust.
