Frustrated with being stuck in the baby class, Anne convinced a reluctant Eda to train her and teach her another spell. As a result, they promptly headed far away to the Knee, with King and her detention friends tagging along.

Anne started to get frustrated with Eda's way of teaching, so she went off and sat alone near a cliff to reflect on herself, and Viney joined her not long after. Feeling comfortable around her, Anne reflected on how her friends, particularly Sasha, treated her back on Earth, but Viney quickly pointed out their manipulative behavior, and this led Anne to seriously question how authentic her old friends actually were.

Meanwhile, King was off examining a strange giant slitherbeast on his own, but his curiosity got him too close to the beast, and as he inevitably slipped and fell, the beast awoke. Fully enraged, it charged toward King, who panicked and ran toward the others, but as a result, the beast quickly trapped everybody. As Anne noticed a particular glyph that just happened to materialize in the sky and snow, she tried using it against the beast, and to her surprise, it was a new fire glyph.

After defeating the slitherbeast thanks to her new spell, Anne felt happy having saved the others but also got a new perspective on her old friends and wondered on the way back what she'd do if they ever reunited again.

Chapter Twenty-Eight - Understanding Willow

In the halls of Hexside, Boscha was hanging out with Amity as she tinkered with her looks by changing her nails with magic. The first attempt protruded small tentacles from her fingernails. "Too wiggly." Trying again, Boscha's nails transformed into miniature flames. "Too obvious." She tried one last time, and they now looked like talons. "Now, we're talkin'! I think today is a talon's day. Rawr!" She swiped her hand playfully.

"Hey, girls!" Skara greeted them, walking up to them, holding a bundle of what looked to be folded red paper at first glance. "Time to bug out at my birthday party!" She pulled one of the folded-up invites from the bundle, and it unfolded, revealing itself as a glowing jewel-encrusted red butterfly. Handing it to Boscha, she continued. "Invite only, but you witches are my VIPs!"

Amity also took an invite for herself and unfolded it to see it up close. "Are these made of real insect wings?" she asked with a quizzical look, almost impressed at how much labor this must've needed.

"My dad spared no expense," Skara replied, sort of answering her question. "You only turn fifteen once!"

"You only turn every age once, Skara," Boscha muttered, narrowing her eyes at her friend as if she were stupid.

"Wait, you're telling me humans have their own version of Penstagram?" a voice from the other side of the hall blurted out, surprising them. It turned out to be none other than Viney, as she was huddled with Anne and Willow in the middle of the hall. She was curious about what Anne's society was like as she glanced at the human's phone.

"Yeah, the internet's a weird place," Anne replied. "I don't have phone service right now, but maybe I could show you guys later." She closed the app and saw 99+ missed texts and calls on her phone, almost certainly from her worried parents. Suppressing a sigh, Anne put her phone away, knowing she would have to worry about that sooner or later. Still, she wasn't yet sure how she'd deal with this.

Watching them from a distance, Boscha was unimpressed when she saw Anne hanging around with that puny girl Willow, as usual. She didn't really like Viney either, but didn't care about her as much. "It's so weird that a human goes here now. Too bad she's already burned her social life at the stake," Boscha said. "Any friend of Willow's is an automatic dork."
