From when I was born until the age of eleven, I lived in a small block apartment with my parents. We had little to no money. Most of the money my parents received would go towards my dad's drug addiction and my mom's drinking problem. Luckily, the block apartments were owned by a kind man named Murray. Considering our family had lived there for a while, Murray had grown to know my parents well. Along with their actions. When my parents would be passed out on the sofa from a long night of partying, arguing, fucking and fighting... I would sit with Murray in his office. Murray fed me everyday and eventually gave me small jobs to carry out for him, all for me to earn a little bit extra money to care for myself. Now in life, i realize if it wasn't for Murray feeling bad for me and watching me grow up... we would have had no roof over our head. All because of my parents lack of care.
I worked for Murray from age 9-11 years old. Soon enough, the incident between my parents happened and my Grandma Nancy took me in. if it wasn't for Murray and Nancy... I could have been a different person today. A one who never took her ass to college and got herself a job. I would have been exactly like my parents... shameful people.
Sitting by the quarry while hand washing my clothes reminds me of when I was a little girl trying to clean my own clothes in the bath at the apartment. We had no money for the launderette and no room for a washing machine... besides that was also too expensive for my family. On the bright side, if my parents weren't fuckups I probably wouldn't have had a clue how to survive on my own domestically so far.
"What do you miss most about normal life amalia?" Jacqui asked me with a beaming smile, noticing how quiet I had been.
I looked around while letting out a "hmm" before looking back to Jacqui. Quickly realizing it wasn't just Jacqui waiting for my answer to the difficult question, it was also Andrea, Amy and Carol. I hadn't given much thought to the past and what life was like.
"Umm... honestly i just miss instant noodles..." i looked at them before laughing to myself, "i mean, squirrels are not too bad when Dixon cooks them up but i wouldn't mind just noodles" i smiled.
"Let me guess... you either can't cook or you had a busy life?" Andrea laughed looking at me with a questioning look.
"Honestly both. I never grasped the talent of cooking and also instant noodles were just easy" i sighed as i felt my stomach growl... all the talk of instant noodles making my body hungry. "But do not be fooled... my instant noodles are so tasty, you could say they are gourmet!" they all let out a loud laugh causing me to raise my hands in defense, "HEY! You are all laughing now but even Gordon Ramsay would say they were 'fucking splendid!'" I spoke with a fake British accent mocking the 5 star chef.
All the ladies laughed loud at my enthusiasm for noodles. I noticed Ed standing close listening to our conversation or just simply hovering around carol like the controlling man he is. Carol could do better than that egg. I hate egotistical men who think they have some sort of power over women. It is disgusting and humpty dumpty over there was for sure one disgusting man.
"I do miss my maytag" carol spoke quietly.
"I miss my benz and satnav" andrea replied,
"I miss my coffeemaker with that dual-drip filter and built in grinder" Jacqui added to the list.
"My computer... and texting" amy said as we all nodded emphasizing with her.
"I miss my vibrator" Andrea told us, wiggling her eyebrows. All of us erupted with laughter, not being able to contain the giggles we shared. Yet, never would we have ever seen the next comment coming from a mile away.
"Me too" Carol quietly mumbled. Everyone stopped laughing looking at her trying to understand if they heard her correctly. She nodded and once again that set us all back off.
