wake up

School had just been dismissed for the day, and there had been an unexpected snowstorm while school was in session. Since this was so out of the blue, I had to walk home in the snow. The cold was bitter and unforgiving, as the snow landed on my bare skin I could feel a small prick. There was a shortcut home, fortunately, through the woods. I never liked going through the woods, something always felt off in there, but I didn't want to continue in this snow for much longer. I made my way to the forest, I looked around a bit confused. I must have been lost in my thoughts for so long I didn't realize there was no sound, no cars were on the road. Which was a bit strange since this road was always busy, but since it was snowing I brushed it off. Even though it was strange there were no buses driving past.

Soon, as I walked, the amount of trees started growing around me, the empty forest engulfing me. The path was quiet, the only sound was my feet crunching in the snow. I continued to walk, hoping time would pass quickly and would reach my home soon. In the corner of my vision, I saw something. I turned to it, nothing. Must be my mind playing rude tricks on me again. But as I kept walking down the path, I saw something else, I could barely make it out as a tall dark figure in a top hat. I turned again to try and see the figure, nothing.

Right as I turned back to start speed walking down the path, I heard a crunch right behind me, the sound of feet walking in the snow. I stopped, I'm not sure why, maybe that was the second I realized, maybe my mind wasn't playing tricks on me. After a few seconds of silence, I found my feet again and started sprinting down the path. Even if it was my wild imagination, I didn't want to stay around to find out.

As I ran, the path seemed to be growing longer, and I started seeing the figures all around me. My breath quickened and I was horrified, my lungs felt frozen and I couldn't breathe anymore. It felt like there was no sense of time anymore, just an endless cycle of running. I could now see my house in the distance, maybe my parents were home, maybe I could go into my room and sleep so I could stop seeing these things. Reached my porch and paused, the door was locked. I was trapped out here while I attempted to find my keys. I searched in my pockets. I glanced around my neighborhood to hopefully see someone walking down the sidewalk. Nobody. I slipped my keys into the keyhole and struggled to twist them with my shaky hands.

I paused, I heard someone breathing right behind me. Warm air fell onto my skin. Was this it? Was I going to die? Why couldn't I scream? My lungs felt empty and no matter how hard I tried, nothing would come out and alarm my neighbors.

There was a click, the door was now unlocked. I twisted the handle and swung open the door. I ran inside, shutting the door behind me and locking it quickly. I pulled out my phone to call the cops and looked out the window on the side of the door. Nothing. Whatever that thing was that was following me couldn't have gotten away that quickly, could it? "Mom? Dad?" I called, hoping for a reply. Nothing. I was still looking out the window, for some strange reason I couldn't look away. I finally turned around. I dropped my phone on the floor, and my body started to shake. All over the walls, floors, and ceiling, there was red writing. It just repeated the phrase, 'wake up' over and over. All over the furniture and carpet, 'wake up'. What was happening, and why me? I didn't want to go outside and be met with that figure, so I ran up the stairs and to my room. All over read, 'wake up'. This time, when I tried to scream it worked. My body seemed to violently shake when I did, when I was out of air to scream, a headache ran through my head. I fell to the floor and started sobbing. I was so scared, I had dropped my phone so I couldn't call the cops. I then heard the front door open, it was that man, I knew it was. I helplessly started to crawl under my bed. The footsteps led up the stairs, they stopped in front of my room. Why me? The door opened, my vision was blurry and distorted by the tears. The world seemed to start to shake and rumble under me. The figure was all black, no color or any dimension to them. Just a black figure that seemed to be a man. But I knew better, this wasn't a man. It was a creature that seemed to have crawled out of the darkest pit in the darkest corner of your nightmare to drag you back with it. It started to walk towards the bed, and bent down. I shut my eyes tight, hoping it would get it over with and this would all end. But it didn't, it was quiet. Maybe it had disappeared or left. I opened my eyes slightly. To my horror, I was wrong. Staring back at me was a faceless head, that seemed to be smiling. I don't know how in the world it could be smiling, but it was, it was faceless and smiling.

How odd. "Wake up" it said. It started repeating it. Over and over and over and over. My body seemed to be limp, I couldn't move or say anything. Then, the figure brought down a hand and it came to my face. It covered my eyes. It was the most painful thing that has ever happened to me. Like I was being stabbed in the face repeatedly with a frozen knife. That was when I found my voice and screamed. My blood seemed to be on fire and my tears felt as if they were small blades leaving my eyes. I had no vision anymore. Yet somehow I just knew, this time when I screamed, the world started breaking in half. My body being stretched with each half, neither side wanting to let go. Like a cruel game of tug of war. My face was no longer in tack with my head. I was faceless just like it. Wake up. Then, came a sense of relief. The pain was gone. I had no more emotions, I felt numb and empty. I had lost myself. The last thing I remember feeling was the small prick in my empty chest where my heart used to be. The feeling was quick and disappeared just as quick as it had appeared. That was the moment I realized. I had been molded into the same faceless creature. I, was that monster.
