It's been a year since Amber had last seen her step-brother, Colin. The only thing that she remembered of him was the day of his kidnapping.
They were both sleepy due to some mysterious gas bomb that was thrown through their window, releasing an unknown chemical into the air. Then these guys in white trench coats and gas masks barged in through the front door, taking a look around before exchanging a few words to each other. Amber couldn't hear what they were saying, though, as her hearing was already getting muffled once the two guys came in.
They then took one glance at Colin, and in an instant, took him away. Amber never saw him again after that. There were so many questions engraved in her brain ever since that day, screaming for answers.
"Why did they take Colin? Why him out of all people?"
"Why didn't they take me too, or just take me instead of Colin?"
"What did they want with him?"
"Is he still even alive?"
Yet, no matter how much she asked, no one knew the answers to her questions. She didn't blame them, though. She expected that.
But the one thing that made her mad, the one, tiny thing that she wished she could've changed a long time ago was her and Colin's relationship. The thing is, Colin was adopted; brought into Amber's family since he didn't have one. Their relationship started off pretty good when they were kids, but once they grew up, they grew further apart. Amber knew the reason: she was harsh and overprotective of Colin. She never let Colin do what he wanted to do, and that pissed him off.
He would always scoff or grunt at Amber if she tried to talk to him, or just outright ignore her,
But Colin was acting pretty weird on the day of his kidnapping. He was... scared? Worried? Amber had remembered that Colin ran up to her, explaining to her about how he saw something weird. Like an animal standing on two legs, but it had some sort of gooey texture to it. Like latex. Colin mentioned that he didn't try to get close to it until the thing noticed that he was there, chasing after him. He was able to get away, however.
Amber couldn't hear everything that Colin was saying since he was talking too fast, so that was all she heard. She ended up believing him though and went out to find the thing herself.
But she couldn't find it. It was gone. After overthinking everything, Colin, the "animal", the two men that entered their house and took Colin away, a new question popped up in her head.
"Was that why they took Colin away? Because he saw something he shouldn't have?"
It seemed like a possibility.
Her mind was starting to unblur.
She remembered that the two men had some sort of logo on their trench coats, "Latexo Laboratory". She knew that place. That was one of Amber's jobs until they fired her for no reason. All they did was work with animals and latex.
The experiments were weird, but after participating in several of them, she got used to it. The experiments were mostly just them trying to merge certain animals with the latex. If the experiment was successful, the animal would be able to walk on two legs, become taller, shorter, or just have a different appearance altogether.
Maybe that was what Colin saw? One of their experiments probably escaped the lab and found their way to where Colin was at that time? Maybe.
But this brought another question to her mind.
"I was once a worker there. So if they did get Colin for seeing one of their experiments on accident, why didn't they get me too? I saw everything that they did there. Maybe the men didn't recognize me?"
Things aren't adding up. She'd either go outside and sniff out some clues, or just stay in her little cabin and think until she goes insane. She didn't want that.
Amber wanted to go outside, to find her brother, to look for answers, but at the same time, she didn't want to. It wasn't because she was lazy. It's not that. It was just that she was scared. Not too long ago, several asteroids had hit different places on Earth, including Amber's hometown, completely destroying it, which made her have to flee to a nearby town; the town that she was settled in right now. But ever since those asteroids had hit Earth, these gooey, alien-like creatures had appeared, and they seemed to eat anything in their path.
That was what Amber was scared of.
But if she wanted to find her brother, she would have to just deal with it, and try her best to avoid them, right?Amber got up from her chair and walked outside.
