Clear blue skies, healthy trees, and a thriving town.
Nothing went wrong while Amber was deep in her thoughts. Good.
Azalea Town was pretty small, but peaceful. It was the town that Amber had run off to when her hometown, Wyrmwood Village, got destroyed not too long ago. It was a sudden event, but Amber had no time to grieve for her lost home. She had an even bigger issue to deal with, which was her brother.
Latexo Laboratory wasn't that far from Azalea. Just a couple of steps and you’d already be there.
Amber looked up from her cabin, turning around to see the laboratory hidden behind a few trees in the distance. Amber sighed. I mean, to some people, it would be a fast walk, but to Amber? Pfft, she’d pass out before she could even reach the lab. She wasn't very fond of athletic events, so she never participated in them, which resulted in her having low stamina. She was that lazy.
But for once, she actually had to get some exercise one day without using her car (thank god she left it back at her hometown). So if she was going to walk, she decided that she would take tiny breaks in between to catch her breath and rest her legs while also avoiding the alien creatures that suddenly appeared on Earth.
She still hasn't forgotten about them. I mean, who wouldn't? They're aliens.Amber took a couple of steps forward, stopped, looked around, and then continued walking. She would repeat this action until she reached the forest in which the laboratory resided, stopping near the forest entrance. She gulped. She didn’t know why, but there was a little feeling in her stomach, like she had just eaten butterflies. Maybe it was her paranoia, scared that those alien creatures would jump out at her and attack until there was nothing of her left. She didn’t want that, and standing still in one place wasn’t going to avoid that event if it ever happened. Amber took a step forward, still looking past the trees as if there was danger lurking around before picking up her pace, sprinting across the forest floor. She didn’t like the forest and how… cramped, it looked to her.
There were plenty of trees for people (or something) to hide behind, and anything could easily blend in with the bushes. She kept on running until her legs had completely given up, forcing her to sit down on a nearby log. Amber wheezed, a cold hand clamped around her throat and forehead to cool it down. Well, this was great. It took Amber minutes, nearly hours for her to re energize. That doesn’t sound good, right?
So Amber had to sit there, on a rough log, waiting for her legs to gain strength again and get some air in her lungs for several minutes. But we don’t really have time for that, and Amber knew that. If she wanted to find her brother right away, she might as well deal with it. She just has to walk slowly, very slowly, so that she wouldn't get tired. Again.Amber carefully, and slowly, stood up from the log, taking in a deep breath before looking at the forest trail in front of her. She still wasn’t close to the laboratory, but she wasn’t far away either. After several, useless seconds of staring at a dirt ground, she was on her way, walking at a sloth’s pace.
I mean, at least she's making progress instead of wasting her time on a log.
She kept on walking, and walking, and walking until a sound, kind of like a rustling sound, was heard not so far from where Amber was. Amber halted, her breathing now becoming unsteady and loud as she desperately looked around. She thought of all the possibilities of what it could've been. Maybe she accidentally kicked a rock that she didn’t see and it bumped into a bush? Maybe it was a squirrel or another forest creature, or it could've been the wind playing with her head. Or maybe, just maybe…
An alien.
But it couldn’t have been that, right? Still could've been the other possibilities that she thought of, but her mind kept convincing her that it was an alien.
“Okay, Amber. Take a deep breath.”
Amber thought.
“It's just your mind playing with you. In the end, it could've been the wind or-”Amber was immediately snapped out of her thoughts with the same rustling sound that she heard before, but this time, it was louder. Closer. Amber was panicking. She didn’t know what to do in a situation like this. If it was actually an alien, what would she do? She didn’t know anything about this creature, and based on what she saw of it, they seemed to eat almost everything. Mostly animals, though. So that meant she didn’t stand a chance against them.
Amber stood still for a moment, listening to see if it was all just her imagination.
Nothing. No noise. Nothing.
She sighed. “This is stupid.” She thought. “Why did I have to leave my car behind? I wouldn’t be in this stupid forest if only I didn’t leave my stupid car.”Amber stayed in the same position, standing up straight while constantly looking around, still making sure if it was safe before moving on. It was only when she turned around that she saw something. A tall figure with what seemed like… four arms in the distance? It didn’t seem like the thing had noticed her until it turned around, facing Amber with its big, glowing, orange eyes. Amber’s eyes widened. “I'm done for.”
If she were to run right now, not only will she run out of energy, but the thing might catch up to her and, what, eat her? But Amber had no choice. She didn’t know if this thing was a threat or not, and she didn’t want to risk her life trying to find out, so she just ran. She got back on her tracks and ran as fast as her little legs could take her. Amber desperately needed to catch a break so that she could inhale some air, but she couldn't, not right now.She was almost close to the laboratory, which was good, but she wasn’t sure if the figure was behind her or not, so she took a small little peek behind her, still running as she didn’t want to risk it.
It wasn’t behind her.
Amber let out a tiny chuckle, glad that the thing was gone. For now. She turned her head so that she could see the path in front of her again. But as soon as she turned around, she rammed herself into a tree, her head taking most of the impact.
She immediately fell to the ground, and everything went black.
Author's Note
Haha, I cannot write a scene where a character rams into something and passes out. Sorry if that seemed rushed.
