"Mama! Mama!"
Morningpaw hurried towards the Medicine Den where his mother was having kittens. The thought of being an older brother excited him, he could be a role model for them!
However, as he neared the entrance, he was stopped by a slender, grey she-cat whose dark green glare made him stop in his tracks.
Silverheart. She was the MossClan Medicine Cat. Maybe... She was just waiting to tell him the good news about the kits.
"Silverheart? Can I go in? Where are the kits? And-"
"No, Morningpaw." Silverheart turned her head away,"There are no kits."
Morningpaw stopped, confused. No kits? But his father told him she was having kits and his father never lied!
"But-" Morningpaw began, although he was cut off.
"Morningpaw, your mother is dead."
The words... They didn't seem real. No... No! His mother, the kits... They couldn't be...
"Morningpaw, come here."
The familiar voice of his father, Brambleleg, called to him from behind and he ran back to him, jumping up at him.
"Dad! Dad, it can't be true! C-can it..?"
The large, ginger tom sighed,"It's just you, me and your brother left, Morningpaw."
