chapter seven:
the homecoming hangoverbeep, beep, beep, beep "Charlie..." beep, beep.. "Charlie can you hear me?". Beep, BEEP, BEEP! Her eyes opened weakly, she felt the pain that ran along her body right away. It was a painful burning sensation that ached when she tried to move.
"Charlie" she blinked rapidly as she felt someone touch her hand. "She's awake!" the light was bright making her wince slightly. She moved her hand letting it touch her throat, she felt the bandage.
She tried to speak but it hurt "careful sweetheart, try not to speak". She let out a heavy breath as she looked at her mother who sat beside her.
"I was so afraid I almost lost you, you stopped breathing when they brought you here. Oh god, when I got that call I was so terrified. Made me think of your father all over again".
Charlie gripped her mothers hand tightly "I called in at work, I'm going to take care of you, I'm so sorry that I wasn't being a good mother to you".
Charlie whimpered as tears slipped out of her eyes. Her mother gripped her face wiping away the tears. "I won't let anyone hurt you again baby, we're gonna get whoever did this to you".
Charlie groaned her back aching as she leaned into herself. "I'll get the nurse" her mother stood up walking out of the room.
Hanna stood up when she saw Charlie's mother step out of the room. "Misses Carter! Is Charlie okay?". At the sight of Hanna speaking with Charlie's mother Spencer and Aria approached them.
"She's okay girls, just in a little bit of pain. I imagine she'll be bed ridden for a few days. I already called the school to tell them she'll be absent. Right now she just needs some time to process what happened to her".
"Can we see her?" The woman looked at Hanna "she'll be at home tomorrow. You girls can see her then if she's up for it. Now I'll need to find a nurse". She walked off and Hanna sighed.
"This is all my fault" Aria and Spencer both smiled sadly "Hanna you didn't know this was going to happen. I mean it came out of nowhere".
Hanna sat down "it was A... it had to have been, you saw the message they sent to me last night". The girls all sat in silence for a moment before Aria spoke "do you think A is going to try and hurt us next? If it really was them who attacked Charlie.. I can't imagine they'll spare us".
"We'll stick together, watch each others backs" Hanna looked at Spencer. "Spencer as much as that sounds comforting, I'm still terrified. You saw how they nearly gutted Charlie. What if they come back and try finishing her off?".
Hanna rubbed at her eyes, she was exhausted. She knew going home would only make her feel worse. Spencer sighed sadly "her mother will be with her Hanna, don't worry A isn't going to get her or any of us. You should go home, you need sleep".

Charlie felt weak when her mother helped her out of the car. She held onto the handlebars of the wheelchair tightly. The doctors said it was best she didn't leave her bed for a week.
Her stitches could rip open if she moved wrong, so she was trapped for an entire week. The thick bandages on her back and throat itched.
She felt like she was suffocating as she let out raspy breaths and whimpers. She felt uncomfortable as her mother pushed her into the house.
"Don't worry Charlie, the doctor said after your wounds heal a little bit you can start physical and speech therapy". Charlie's legs were numb.
The doctor said she was lucky the attacker didn't go through her nerves again. It was one little cut, just enough to make her legs go numb.
In her case she would be able to walk again once her wounds healed and the swelling went down from the surgery's she went under.
The doctor said the only part that was still gonna be hard to tell if it would work again. Was her voice, the knife went pretty deep into her vocal cords.
The doctor said she was lucky to have survived a wound like that. He also said if she did manage to speak again, it would hurt the first few months. Her voice wouldn't be the same again regardless if it came back or not. She honestly didn't care if she sounded like a dying chicken the rest of her life, as long as her voice came back, that's all she wanted.
Charlie waved weakly at Jack who stood by the stairs. "Jack help me get your sister into the guest bedroom". She would be stuck on the first floor of her own home, inside the guest bedroom.
No one ever used it, Charlie wanted to be in her room. But she knew her mother wouldn't have been able to carry her up all the stairs. So Charlie was okay with being stuck downstairs for the time being. Even if it would absolutely suck.
Jack walked ahead of them pushing the guest bedroom doors open. He cried when he got the call from his mother. The woman was frantic and sobbing as she talked into the phone.
The only words he remembered "your sisters been attacked!" She didn't form any words after that. She let him stay home while she stayed at the hospital with Charlie. Part of him wished he went too.
Charlie groaned when her mother helped her into the bed. "Alright now you can rest, if you need anything just ring the bell. Jacks got a whiteboard so you can write things down for us".
Jack smiled as he placed the whiteboard down on Charlie's lap. The girl smiled as she grabbed it. The sound of knocking made her mother sigh "I bet you it's those friends of yours. I told them to wait until you were settled in. Suppose they're worried".
Charlie grabbed her mothers hand quickly making the woman pause as she looked at the whiteboard. Charlie grabbed the marker writing quickly.
No, I don't wanna see them
Her mother smiled "I'll tell them you're sleeping, do you want me to tell them to come back later?".
Charlie erased the board and wrote down again, this time making sure she didn't mess up the words.
NO! I DONT WANNA SEE HANNA
Her mother nodded before walking out of the room. Charlie wiped at her face in distress. Jack sat at the end of the bed "mom seemed pretty upset on the phone when she called me. I was actually kinda surprised when she said she called off work".
"Hey! You can't go on there!" The door burst open and Hanna appeared in the doorway. Charlie looked at Jack and he stood up "hey, you can't be in here".
Hanna let out a heavy breath "Charlie! Your mom said you were sleeping, I just wanted to see if you were okay and hopefully talk".
Jack stood in front of Charlie "she doesn't want to see you, get the hell out of here!". Jack pushed Hanna out of the room before slamming the door shut. Charlie smiled in relief as she heard Hanna walking off down the hallway.
