Zenathi's POV
This started on her 14th birthday, My whole family was there. There was a ritual for the upcoming ceremony ( umhlonyane) where she was going to be taught to be a young lady. Everything was going according to the plan until my father’s 3rd wife said something that puzzled me...
“ Okuhle umdala, Nguye omele ahlomule, Zelo uyalandela. Uzalwa nje ngelanga elilodwa kodwa akuwona amawele, Ngithi mina MaShenge, uZelo no Okuhle akuwona amawele kumele ubezele lemisebenzi ihlukene, kungenjalo nizothi ngasho” (Okuhle is the oldest, he must get the ceremony first, then Zenzelo follows. They were both born on the same day but they are not twins, l am saying Mvelokuhle and Zenzelo are not twins, you need to separate the ceremony or else, something bigger than us is coming)
“ Kanjani?... I got these kids the same day, the same time so yindaba uthi akuwona amawele?” my mother asked“ Umoya uyasho ukuthi uMvelo lo umdala ngoko moya Una 15 kodwa uZelo Una 14 kodwa keh Mvelo akasekho kufana nokudlala kodwa yiwele leli ngokomoya lizoba nomona ligcine limuthathile uZelo” she says looking down at the floor making marks with her walking stick
“ UMVELO KUQALA , ZELO EMUVA!” she screams bring a hot herb tea to her nose to smell the aroma. She usually did that when she was doing a spiritual reading
As a 15 year old, l didn’t understand how can there be twins but they were not born on the same year, mind blowing to be honest, since then l just wanted them to think
l believe that they said about Zelo and Okuhle being twins but the truth was Mvelokuhle was born before Zenzelo... spiritual l mean ,hence why he died the moment he came to this world.
“ Zee, ucabangani?” Zelo asks me bringing me to reality “ Lutho Dade, just l’m worried, these visions and dreams are actually becoming a brutal reality” l say, after what looks like a long way to reply to her, but l was scared, l have heard about ukuthwala but now l do believe my younger brother was used for rituals.
Bhekani’s POV
Things are going pretty well, Me and mom have adjusted to this house, the previous weekend we introduced the house to my father, and l just hope things will be better for us.
Today the 19th , was the day... He was brutally killed, and l always blame myself because l could have save him, his death was my everyday nightmare but l couldn’t do anything, l was... powerless, didn’t know what to do...
“ KWAKUMELE EHAMBE LAPHA, UZULU KWAKUMELE EHAMBE LAPHA, UZULU KWAKUMELE EHAMBE LAPHA!” Little girls that were painted in white singing or chanting loudly, one had a horn on her forehead, the other one had half horns and red shot eyes, tall and dark, but her skin was covered in that white cray , the last girl was sitting down, without horns, carrying a cray pot. It looked like something was cooking because smoke was filled the air and smelled like herbs,... River herbs, l knew them because my mom once told me that if there was a river herb brewing is because the higher spirits want blood or... Revenge for injustice
“ Ningobani?” (Who are you?) I ask, looking around this cave filled with herbs and shells
“ SINGAMATHONGO, ALIKHO IQILI ALAZIKHOTHA EMHLABE, UYISE WAKHO KWAKUMELE EHAMBE LAPHA “ they said loudly
“Alikho iqili alazikhotha emhlabe “ l say to myself l don’t even know the meaning behind those words
“ UYAZI KUNGANI ULAPHA, BHEKANI?” The tall girl asks with her eyes glued at me
“ Cha, bantu abadala” l reply, honestly l don’t even know what’s going on and l don’t like this,
“ ZENZELO, UMKAKHO USENGOZINI, UYISE WAKHE UNEZIHLOSO NGAYE, UMVIKELE
YINGAKHO UYISE WAKHO KWAKUMELE EHAMBE LAPHA!” she says still looking at me
“ Zenzelo?” l ask myself “ who is that and why my father is involved in this” l continue questioning myself
“ SIMUTHATHILE, NGOBA EBEZO MBULALA, BESINGEKE SIMTHOLE FUTHI KODWA KUZOLUNGA, WENA ZILUNGISELELE, IMPI IYENZE”
They all say, while walking backwards towards an open hole filled with water, flowing water like a river... They voices echoes showing that they are disappearing into the river
“ kodwa kanjani, angimazi lo Zenzelo, “ l say looking at them still walking backwards, “ USUMTHOLILE, SESIFIKILE SIKHATHI UMVIKELE “ they say the last time before disappearing into the river and l’m back in my room
I’m sweating and my window is wide open and l remember l close it...
This dream has been repeat itself from that day , the 19th , tormenting me to the core but today they said something different “sengimtholile, sesifikile sikhathi ngimvikele” l say to myself
“ Kwezenjani?” my mom asks standing at the door, scaring the shxt out of me “ Mama! Eish wangithusa” l say looking breathless “ Are you okay Khehla?” she comes near my bed , takes the chair and sits in front of me... Sigh sitting like a man “ Phendula phela” she continues looking at me
“l just had a nightmare nothing new” l say
“Mmm... Abantu badala bayalalelwa Bhekani, like it or not “ she says with a straight face, she sighs and continues “ uBabakho Bhekani wakuyindoda emandodeni, you know that True love where he did anything to make me happy and l would do the same thing “ she goes quiet and then chuckles “ l remember the day l first saw him, l was freshly from Bulawayo, ngisakhuluma isiNdebele sase Zim, l didn’t come to South Africa to be playing with boys but to work, ugogo wakho was sick, very sick and medical care was very bad in Zimbabwe.” She sighs and continues“ Your father, back then was a taxi owner, so when he came to me, l didn’t want anything to do with men especially him but ...” she smiles “ he charmed me, he paid lobola and did a traditional wedding” she says showing me her wedding photos on her phone .
“anisebahle, manje why you were thick la?” l ask curiously looking though the pictures, she chuckles loudly “ l was pregnant with you wena “ pinching my cheeks, l look at her then laugh “ ehhh you were cute thou “ l say still looking at that picture “ Your Grandma was so happy that l was pregnant but your grandfather wasn’t because l’m spiritual gifted so my pregnancies usually had complications but with you, you were very healthy and Mkhulu started to love me as his daughter “ her smile fades as she thought something
“ life was beautiful until that man wanted to kill your father, after he killed his own father so that he can inherit all the business, we had to move and go to his home town oLundi were your grandparents lived , ubabakho had to sell him taxi business because of being afraid that his little family will be at risk so when you were growing up you didn’t see that your father was actually a taxi owner but he wanted to protect you from all these things”
she finishes and then her face gets hard and goes back to the position she was in, sitting like a man, she did that when she didn’t want to have a trance
“ So , now you have to fight after Matric , that man will sacrifice her daughter and he will be very dangerous, to the extent where he would kill anyone in his way so please focus, funda then find her but l think you have already found her, she looked like him...”she sits normally then sighs “ Okay , sleep tight khehla, uyazi umama uyakuthanda angisho!?” she stands up, close the window and then stands at the door “ Yebo ma,ulale kahle” l say, l have lots of questions but l know she wouldn’t answer me, not now at least maybe later, her trying to stop the trance drains her energy so l don’t want to add more stress, she smiles and closes the door.
Whatever is going on, l will need help.
