"You're Y/N, right?" I look up to see the same black-haired girl from before. She gives me a warm smile while taking a seat at the desk in front of me. Speak of the devil and she will appear.
"Yes, that's me, who are you?" I prop myself up a little bit more and rest my chin on my hands.
"I'm Abby, it's nice to finally meet you! I've heard so much about you from James," she admits while holding her hand out for me to take, so I do and I shake her hand.
"Wish I could say the same," I say with a weak laugh. I could see her eyes change to a curious expression. Her eyes are easy to read. I pull my hand away after a second and place it on my lap.
"So, how did you meet James?" she asks while inching her chair closer to my desk.
"Um, we've been best friends since like elementary school, what about you?" her face lights up for some odd reason.
"Really? That's so cute! It's like a love story!" I can't help but cringe at her words.
"Ew! No! We're like family! We would never!" I hold my hands up as if to block her words. I can hear Abby laughing. Such a pretty laugh. She lowers my hands she has a big smile on her face.
"I know, he told me that, I just wanted to see for myself," she admits and her smile only grows. Didn't think that was possible.
"So, how did you and James get close?" I ask, already regretting the answer.
"Actually because of you," her smile softens and she places her elbows on my desk.
"What do you mean? I haven't even been here?" I ask and she chuckles softly.
"That's the point. I transferred here and James and I had some classes together. He always seemed so down and glared at everyone but we were grouped for a lab and I don't take anyone's shit, especially from men so I lost my shit when he mouthed off at me for trying to do the assignment, I guess you also bitch at him and put him in his place if he's being stupid. So we got closer and he opened up to me about you and asked what he should do and here we are," she beams. She likes him. A lot. Her eyes shine when she talks about him.
"He was that bad?" I question and she nods.
"Go talk to him, he misses you, a lot," she places her hand on mine, giving it a slight squeeze before facing forward in her seat.
The class flew by after that. As soon as the bell rang, Abby and I left class together and helped me find James. Once we did, she left me to talk with him. James pulled me to the janitor's closet, locking the door once we got inside.
"Dude, anyone would think we're in here to fuck or something, why didn't you just bring me outside?" I can't help but laugh but James glares at me. Damn.
He doesn't respond, instead, he walks closer to me. Towering over me. Jesus, he got tall. I can't help but take a step back but I hit an empty mop bucket instead. Shit. I look up at James and our eyes meet. He looks sad but he's masking it with anger.
"James?" I ask. He doesn't answer. He just grips my shoulders and stares down at me.
"Earth to Ja-," he cuts me off by yanking me into his arms. Wrapping them tightly around me. Something I haven't felt in a long time. It's comforting.
"I missed you, moron. Don't ever shut me out like that again. You can't hurt me. You never have and you never will," his voice cracks with every other word, I could feel his breath picking up and hitching. Then I feel it. The warm tears hit my shoulder. I instantly wrap my arms around him, gripping the back of his shirt.
"I'm sorry, I'll never do that again, I was just so scared," my eyes begin to sting. At this point, James is full-on crying.
Chapter two (2,020)
I manage to get him to sit down by the door and wipe off some of his tears. I always hated seeing him cry. One cause he is the only person who cries pretty. It pisses me off. But his eyes show so much pain when he cries, it hurts.
"Why would you block me out?" he asks while grabbing a hold of my hand.
"Exactly why you think I did. I didn't want to accidentally hurt you or worse. You're the only one I had left," I try to pull my hand out of his but he tightens his grip.
"You're a dumbass," he hisses while grabbing the back of my neck with his free hand, pulling me closer to his face. He then places a kiss on my forehead.
"Promise you won't do that again, no matter what," he pulls away and looks into my eyes.
"I promise," he lets go of me once I promise him.
"So, who's Abby?" I ask and I can see James' cheeks light up. Still terrible at hiding his emotions.
"She came to the school last year, she was the only one who helped me while you were gone. She gave me tips and stayed by my side when I thought no one would, I, I like her," he says with the cheekiest grin on his face while rubbing the back of his neck. What a dork.
"Have you told her yet?" I question while gently punching his arm. He rubs the spot I punched.
"I'm scared," he confesses while staring at the floor.
"Woah, you're scared? That's a first," I say in a teasing manner. He gives me an annoyed look.
"I bet you'll never tell her," I smirk over at him. Knowing he will never back down from a bet. He puffs up his chest and scoffs at me.
"End of the day today. I'll make her mine," he confidently says. I knew it. He just needed the push.
