Fariya and her mother sat on the breakfast table along with Shehryar and his parents, eating and drinking silently.
Suddenly, a thought occurred to Yousuf, causing him to frown slightly as he faced Fariya.
"Fariya, Shafiq had told you were engaged?" He asked her, setting down the morsel of paratha he'd broken off. Fariya set down her glass of water, looking at him as her heart dropped to her stomach.
Right. She'd been engaged once.
Shehryar silently watched, unable to help the seed of disappointment that bloomed inside his chest. She was engaged? He decided it wasn't just disappointment, rather he was almost hurt.
With much reluctance, he admitted to himself that he had started to like her. Like like her. Not just as his cousin or friend anymore.
Yousuf had merely asked the question because he'd started feeling responsible for Fariya after his brother had passed away. But he was unaware of the storms raging inside of Fariya and Shehryar at his question, both having roused for different reasons.
Sadaf looked to her daughter, worried about how she'd suddenly gone silent. She had known that she felt something Junaid but she'd also seen that she was getting over it, because of Shehryar.
That was yet another thing she had to discuss with her brother-in-law.
"They broke off the engagement." Sadaf answered instead of Fariya and the girl pulled her hands in her lap, playing with her fingers. Subconsciously, she pulled her dupatta around herself, hiding the scars on her jaw and neck.
Shehryar sagged in relief at the information. He shouldn't be happy that her engagement had been broken off, but he was. At least he still had a chance then.
What exactly are you thinking, doofus? His thoughts chimed in and he mentally slapped away the voice. But the grin he'd been trying to hold back soon changed into a frown when he looked at Fariya, who seemed sad.
Getting reminded of her broken engagement had only reminded her of the reason it had been broken off in the first place.
However, Yousuf didn't think much before he asked another question. "Why did they break off the engagement? Hadn't the boy's father been a friend of Shafiq? I thought they were good people."
Her eyes began to fill up just as her leg started trembling under the table. She tightly gripped her knee, motioning for Maliha to come over. "Excuse me." She said and pushed back her chair before taking the other girl's hand and heading to her room.
Sadaf sighed, hating how insecure Fariya had become and started explaining everything to Yousuf. Saima and him offered reassurances to Sadaf while Shehryar sat there with clenched fists and jaw, fuming in anger at the reason his tayi had said.
