"Thank you for letting me stay here. Do you prefer me to call you Robert or Rob?" I asked Rob was leading me into my temporary bedroom, The walls were filled with maps and old paintings, some vinyl, and a bed with a canopy frame it wasn't anything more than a twin bed, so I set my small bag down and sat on the bed. The lighting from the cold weather. Winter was always my favorite, but I couldn't dress properly so I didn't go out much.
The smell of old books and coffee roams in the air.
"Call me Rob, it seems fitting for me. Thanks for asking young man."
Someone walked into the shop, Rob pulled my arm softly over to the shop.
"Sorry, ill be right with you!"
Rob yelled at the person in the shop, his voice high-pitched and urgent. It seemed as if he was going to ask me something
"Zane, would you like a job here at my coffee shop?"
"If it is my first job then ill take the job, thank you for hiring me." I replied my eyes sparkling, this was super important for me.
"Ok, go take that person's order then give me the sheet, put this apron on, and take this pen and paper." He pushed me outside to the person, it was a woman. She had long beautiful ginger hair. She had a brown coat that was zipped up with blue jeans, red gloves, and a dark brown beret about the same pretty chocolate brown color as her coat.
"Hello, my name is Zane what could I help you with today?" I walked behind the cash register and took her order,
"Ok, could I have a pumpkin vanilla latte with extra foam and two shots of expresso please?"
"Sure ma'am that would be," I paused to look up at the order board above me, it was 7.79 but with extra foam and two shots of expresso, it would be at least 2.00 more. I quickly did the math in my head
"That would be $9.49 not including tax, will you pay in cash or card?" I repeated
"Card please"
Once we got everything processed I gave Rob the order
*One pumpkin vanila latte, extra foam, two shots of expresso coming up*
Rob yelled, he had his apron on and he made the drink
"Here ma'am your drink, have a nice one," I affirmed reaching over the counter to give
the drink to her.
"Thank you, young man, you have a blessed day."
The woman smiled warmly then went to one of the tables with her things and started to open her laptop and work.
I went to the back where rob was and I went to see how much he liked my skills as a waiter
"So how did I do?"
"You didn't do so bad!" he cooed at my skills, as he traced the wood on the wall. It was an older building with a lot of wood and stone. It looked older than rob but I couldn't tell.
The stove was a newer stove, as well as a newer, remodeled it was pretty, as a kitchen.
I could spend time there. The stove marbled around the counter for chopping vegetables, fruits, and everything in between. The freezer was a walk-in, it was not bigger than the main bathroom in a motel. It was filled with frozen items. The door was like a bank vault. There was a big lock and you could change the temperature from the outside. The door was a texture that I hadn't felt. It looked like a ceiling with texture ans rough. But it was a muffled rough. As of the sea with its waves, as the tip of trees in th forest. The way it's powerful, was just muffled.
Like me, my power is muffled. And I don't have enough strength to push through.
"Hey kid, mails here, it's for you," Robert yells out to me, had drifted off and was in space. I was handed the note, I opened it and read,
"Dear Zane Chekov, this letter has been sent to you to tell you that you have been accepted to Blair academy, an academy for the weird and unworldly.
The school year starts august 21st of 2023, the school list inquires 1 book to the unknown creatures
1 book about carnivorous plants
20-inch foxtail
Book of the unknown birds"

T stopped reading there, I knew I was going, but I wasn't strange, or unworidly. I was an ordinary boy for crying out loud.
"Zane, i see your letter from Blair academy you my boy are special. You should return to a place you know your ancestors rely upon. I'II take you if you want"
"Oh no sir, it's ok I know where id go. Thanks for offering though!" I declined, a gravesite is how I'm spending my weekend I guess.
After an hour of cleaning up the kitchen, Robert closed the shop and sent me with fowers and some other things like a bird feather and a lucky rabbit's foot. It was weird as it seemed like i knew him when I'd never seen this man in my life. The clothes I was wearing were nicer and matched my overcoat. I had a brush with me so I brushed my hair and made it look nice. I looked in the mirror to my reflection, it showed someone who wasn't me, a skinnier person with a nice rounded face, decent cheekbones, and a weird smile. It reminded me of my father. I was a normal boy with a normal mind. A mind that was sane and safe. The reflection had outgrown curly hair that was handsome and eyes of dirt, golden brown. The eyes of a rich man. Behind me, a silhouette was my father's figure. I heard a whisper of his voice,
"you, Zane are a hawk, your wings will fly next wet season. Fly high for my dear"
"What? Father! Don't leave me like this! What does that mean?"
I cried out, almost screaming I dropped to the ground sobbing, what did this mean? Was I a hawk? Or was I just seeing things? Over the course of a few months my back started to hurt, every time I sat down it hurt like something was stabbing my shoulder blades.
*Hey Uhm, Robert? Could I go get checked out by a doctor? My back is hurting a lot more than normal." | whined, not knowing what was happening was a bad thing but what I did know, was it was my father's blessing. I had to come to the realization that I was a hawk, I didn't know what color wings I had but I didn't want to find out.
"Ah yes, I have experience in the medical field, what seems to be troubling you Zane?"
He asked, I turned around and pointed to where my back hurt and I felt something spike out, cutting my finger
"Oh my, Zane. .. you're a hawk? A feather just flew out of your shoulder blade. Did you not know? Most hawks sprout during their younger teenage years but now? It seems lke you're a late bloomer!" he chuckled softly his voice sounding reassuring yet serious.
sounding tone. It was never easy to tell how that man felt.
"Ah, I did not know that I was a hawk until now, could I have a bandage for my hand?
It's kinda bleeding." I laughed, if not obvious enough Robert went to the bathroom to grab bandaids. Once he got back (he kinda tiptoed over) he gave me bandaids to help with my finger, a dark red feather was in my finger, maybe a few inches deep into my skin I pulled it out then blood trickled down my finger at an alarming rate.
" oh my, your wings are going to be beautiful do you want me to help you figure out what is happening to you? Because I can explain it to you but you need to figure yourself out. I hope you know that, but I can totally help you with your wings and how to control them." he offered
"I can't take that offer up, so could you please explain it to me? I don't really understand the hawk wings." I mumbled under my breath. I didn't realize that a lot of things would change in my appearance.
"So, if you are a hybrid hawk, then there are multiple changes that you can have, your hair can change, and your hands, legs, and feet can change. If you're a hawk-human then your back and face will just change. But looking at you I think you are a hawk hybrid. So your hair will probably change as well as your hands and legs. If you want here is a photo of what you will look like, let me pull it out of my drawer"
He walked over to his desk and reached his hand down to grab a few photos, they were taken a long time ago and they looked old. The person in the photo had the legs of a human but a few changes like feathers or fur on their legs. And they looked like animal legs, not human and their arms had little feathers of the color of their wings, it was two-colored, normally black or gray with their color if it was blue, red, or even yellow.
And the photos were colored but faded into a tan color, seeing it was taken in the late 80s as an estimate. The person in the photo had blue wings, so they also had blue fur and hair. Their faces had markings on them that were stripe-like and lots of sharp ends to the markings. Markings are on their nose, the ends of their eyes, and on their cheeks.
It was weird but it looked somewhat like my dad. My father died when I was younger, not knowing much about my dad I never really thought much about it. He died when I was just a young child, maybe 3, 4, maybe? But that didn't matter, what did matter is that I was like my dad. A hawk hybrid, and not like my mother. The more I looked at the photo i saw more of what I remembered of my father, his face, his arms, hands maybe.
He always had claws for fingernails. He didn't cover it up from me, he let it show and he showed me what I might look like when I was older. To my surprise, I will probably sprout wings after all. I hope not to be like my mother because of what she did to me.
"Hey, are you ok? You spaced out while looking at this photo, do you feel a connection with this person?"
"Yeah, but it's just because I'm a little bit of an empath or so I heard. It's ok" I smiled. It looks a lot like my father and he was a hawk so that would explain why I am a hawk.
I "The markings, they're never the same, they are all different. You may have strips or spots. Most hybrid hawks have stripes. No spots, but it's rare to have spots on your face. But you will grow markings all over your body and changes will happen to you."
Robert said, he put a hand on my shoulder, he stood behind me,
Ok, I'm going to put this in your back, it's going to be a sharp needle into your skin, is that ok?"
"Yeah, sure I guess. I really don't care what is it though?" "Oh, it's just a little hormone to speed up the process of your wings growing in. it won't hurt a bit. But you might feel really bad for a while and it might hurt your spice. But you should be fine."
"Ok then. Whatever you say doctor" I laughed. I closed my eyes and hoped for the best but the next thing I knew I was in a dark room, I looked down at my clothes and I saw white clothing on me, and dark red feathers. I tried to get up but I was tied down to the bed I was in.
