I immediately call Johnny. There's no answer. I'm trying to remain calm, but I just know this boy didn't shoot a police officer. April is calling me back but I can't answer my hands are shaking! Johnny calls me back. "Johnny! Please tell me you didn't shoot a fucking cop!"
"What? What cop Cat?"
"Leah's uncle or whoever he is. You said you were going there."
"Yeah, but I am not there I came to my cousins house. I'm still here I was going there after, what happened?"
"It's on the news Johnny, they say he is dead."
I get a call on the other line. I tell Johnny to hold on. I don't recognize the number but I answer anyway.
"Hello?"
"Yeah Leah! I got your number from the phone at work! My husband told me your son is his, and I killed him dead. You better hope the police catch you before I do because you're next!"
She hangs up.
I am in disbelief. I don't know how to tell Johnny or what to say. My hands are shaking. I click back over to Johnny. I gather the courage to tell him the call I just got was from Sandra. When I get the words out of my mouth, Johnny doesn't respond. He tells me to meet him at the nail salon. I agree. The entire ride I am nauseous. Leah is definitely the most cold blooded female I have ever came across.
When I arrive at the nail salon Johnny pulls up about five minutes later. I get out of my car and when he steps out of the truck I can see the sadness in his eyes again. The first thing he says to me is "Cat I keep trying to figure out what I did so wrong to deserve all this. My son is all I have now she's saying he isn't mine." I tell Johnny to calm down because neither of us know if she is lying or telling the truth.
He pulls out his phone and calls Leah. He doesn't get an answer. As soon as he hangs up the phone, his cousin Roger calls him. Roger says "Johnny I have some bad news." Johnny starts screaming. "No! No! No!" At that moment everything stops. The cars passing by the sirens everything goes silent all I can hear is Johnny crying. "He's gone Johnny." Roger says as Johnny hangs up the phone. I take his keys from his hand and lock his truck. I lead him to get in my car. I begin to drive. I don't know where we are going but I'm just driving. I don't know what to say or do. A tear drops from my eye. I quickly wipe it away. This is so sad, and I honestly feel bad for him. Eventually Johnny stops crying. He sits up and wipes his face. "Cat drive me to the hospital please." I agree. On the way there I can't help but hope that Leah is nowhere near the hospital.
As we are taking the exit to the hospital, Johnnys phone begins to ring. It's Roger, but Johnny doesn't answer it. When we pull up, Johnny jumps out of the car. When I step out I see Leah being handcuffed screaming Johnnys name at the top of her lungs. She is crying. Johnny does not even look in her direction he just keeps walking toward the entrance. I follow behind him. When we make it to the front desk Johnny asks if his son is still in room 3305. The woman asks if him got identification. There is an officer there that tells her it is okay to let him in. We go to the elevator. My heart is beating so fast.
When we get off the elevator and make it to the room door. I stand outside, Johnny looks back for me. When he sees I didn't come in he waves for me to come inside the room. No one is inside except for a nurse. He is still hooked to the ventilator. She says "We will give you a few moments. The doctor will come in to brief you about what will take place in the next hour." Johnny doesn't acknowledge what she is saying. He looks stunned. When I look over at the child. He looks so peaceful laying there. Johnny grabs his hand and tears begin to fall from his eyes. "You are all I have. No matter how much your mother put me through I never left you. I'm sorry that I couldn't save you. Daddy is so sorry baby. I wish it wasn't like this. I wish you could be with me forever, but we will be together again and no one will be able to separate us. I don't care what anyone says. You are mine. Always and forever. I love you.
