Bonnie was the first up the next morning. As usual. Which left her the unfortunate task of waking Lyra. "Psst!" She gave Lyra a prod in the side and quickly recoiled, it was not unusual for Lyra to strike out in her half unconscious state. "Lyra!" She hissed

"Hmm" Lyra groaned and rolled over. Bonnie turned round scanning the room for a suitable object to throw at her. Something that would hit her hard enough to wake her but not hurt her.. At least not hurt her to much! She tip toed round the other side of Lyra's bed and grabbed an armful of her fancy cushions, "Perfect" She sniggered. Bonnie took cover at the other side of the room and began launching pillows at Lyra's head. The first one hit the wall and fell down the other side of the bed, "Damnit!" but the second one smacked her straight in the face. Lyra shot up "Oh my God Bonnie!" Bonnie was rolling about the floor in a fit of laughter. Lyra picked up her cushion and pelted it at Bonnie. "Ouch! My face!" She threw it back at Lyra along with another two she had been clutching.

"What are you doing! Trying to wake me up at.." Lyra looked at her bare wrist.

"Its half eight, Lyra"

"Oh" She said as she hopped out of bed and threw her housecoat on. The two girls headed downstairs to get some breakfast.

Not an hour later they were leaving the house and heading up the crescent towards the yard where they both kept their horses. It was a pleasant morning for a ride and the two girls were planning their route as they walked briskly to the yard. "Shall we go to the woods?" Lyra asked, "It's always fun going to the woods!"

"Well, maybe.."

"What?" Lyra looked at Bonnie, "You're still thinking about that lightening aren't you? Bonnie, its a brand new day! The sky is clear! Well almost and its nice and warm!"

"Yes, but doesn't the atmosphere seem a bit strange still?"

"Bonnie" Lyra stopped and turned to face her, "I'm telling you this because I love you.. You. Are. MENTAL!" She began to laugh. Bonnie went quiet and didn't say too much for the rest of the walk, too busy in her head, thoughts racing round about all the possibilities of what might be going on.

The girls arrived at the yard, a cobblestone courtyard sheltered by a 'U' shape building inside which were stables. They walked over to the first two doors where their horses heads poked out and nickered to their owners. "Sommer!" Bonnie hurried over and stoked her horses face over the door. Lyra began taking her horse out of the stable. Lyra's horse was not as a big a Bonnie's, she had a native gelding who was chestnut with a flaxen mane, his name was Bo and despite his size he had the biggest heart either of the girls had ever noticed in a horse. Bonnie's mare on the other hand was quite the opposite, she was taller by a good 4 inches, a beautiful horse with an attitude like no other! Sommer was demanding, unpredictable and a bit moody but Bonnie wouldn't have her any other way! "It keeps me on my toes" She would say. Bonnie put the head collar on Sommer and led her out the stable, the two girls tied their horses up next to each other at the other side of the courtyard and began grooming them. There wasn't much brushing to do as they had been stabled the night before so soon after the girls arrived they were leaving again on horseback heading for the woods.

"Don't you think its kind of quiet?" Bonnie asked as they rode alone one of the bridle paths. Lyra hadn't paid much attention but now hat it had been said she did notice an eerie silence, where were all the families? It was Satuday, the park was usually full of people, children playing dogs barking, "I suppose so, yeah. I wonder where everyone is?"
