"hey, Armin, come check this out!" you say, pointing at a small plant sprouting from the cracked ground, dry from not being showed any mercy from the relentless heat.
Armin crouches beside you, observing the leaf under the bright moonlight. "which one do you think it is?" he asks, and you shrug. you don't really care about the plant that much, much about the creature crawling on top of it.
It was pretty to look at, with all of it's legs slowly walking up on the leaf's veiny terrain. A green body, some brown spots that looked almost blue under the night sky. you were sure it would be a gorgeous butterfly soon, after it made its home in a cocoon under the leaf.
"the bug is really cool..." you trailed off, still captured by the way it moved on the leaf. you'd assumed all nature had slept by now, with the annoying cawing of the crows having died down just a couple hours prior, but this little bug was having the time of it's life, it seemed.
"maybe there's something about it in the book grandpa left me. i don't have it right now, though... maybe some day, we can research about it!" Armin says, and turns to you with a hopeful smile, which you gladly return.
"of course, Min." you say.
Jean feels like a creep looking at you like this, but he can't help it. what was so special about Armin that you sought out speaking to him more than jean? was it the fact that he knew more about plants and flowers than jean did? jean thought you liked that about him, that you could tell him about things he'd never heard of and he'd give you all of his attention, even if he pretended to be interested in other things.
"oi, jean, come on. let's go to the bunks," he heard Marco call out behind him. Jean refused to move, though, and Marco's footsteps eventually came to a halt behind him.
"you're being a creep, looking at them like that." Marco said.
Jean rolled his eyes, "I'm not being a creep." he turns now, moving alongside Marco to the boys bunks. "say, do you have a book or something about plants?"
there's a small pause, and jean is sure marco is smiling cheekily without even having to look at him.
"i don't, but Armin might. why the sudden interest?"
jean shrugs, keeping his eyes on the approaching building with his fingers interlocked behind his head. "no reason."
--
jean massaged his shoulder with his palm, groaning as his legs walked at a slower pace than usual. the last two hours had been spent running with a bag that seemed to be filled with rocks, and Shadis framed it as though if he and his commrades failed this task, they would loose their will to live.
jean felt like it was the opposite. he lost his will to live during the training.
the barracks were about a mile away from where they were currently, all the trainees walking slowly towards their cabins, and jean hoped there would be more food today. there was no way he'd be sleeping with an empty stomach.
