WHEN KASEY WOKE UP IN THE HOSPITAL, she didn't know where she was at first. She barely remembered anything from what happened. All she knew was that she'd been shot on the job while making a drug bust. Kasey slowly sat up, groaning softly in pain as she laid her hand on her wrapped wound, hissing.
She got up and looked around the hospital room she was in, frowning as she tried to recall what happened and how she got there. She remembered the drug bust that her and her partner were supposed to be doing. She remembered her partner getting shot and how she got shot, but after that she has no idea how she ended up in the hospital.
She got out of the hospital bed and went to find some water. She found that the water was still running and drank straight from the faucet. She drank as much as she could until she felt like throwing it back up.
Taking some deep breaths, she stumbled out into the hall and looked around. The hall of the hospital was a wreck, wires hanging from the ceiling, lights flickering, papers and gurneys everywhere she looked. It looked as if a tornado ran through while she was asleep.
"Hello?" Kasey called, moving towards the nurse's station in hopes of finding someone, anyone. She reached over the desk once she managed to get there, searching for some sort of a light source. She found a flashlight and turned it on, a sigh of relief escaping her lips when it lit up the hall in front of her.
Kasey kept stumbling around the abandoned hospital, still having some hope that she would bump into someone. "Hello? Anyone there?" She called out into the darkened hallways. No response ever came.
Sighing in defeat, Kasey changed her plans from finding another human being to finding a way out of the hospital. She found the doors to the cafeteria, but it was barricaded shut with the words 'DON'T OPEN - DEAD INSIDE' written across it. She decided not to stick around and find out what it meant by dead inside.
She originally had gone to the elevators but passed those when she realized there was no power at all. She went to the emergency stairwell instead and opened the door to find the stairwell pitch black. She turned on her flashlight and went down the stairs, trying to find the exit.
She found one after one flight of stairs and pushed it open, cursing under her breath when the sun blinded her. She then noticed how many bodies there were in the loading dock and her heart sank, confusion and sadness washing over her in waves. She headed towards Rick and Lori's house, hoping she'd find someone there.
WHEN SHE REACHED HER FRIEND'S home, she noticed the door was open so she looked around for some sort of weapon and found a rock. She grabbed it and made her way inside. "Rick..? Lori..?" She called out quietly, looking around while holding the rock up.
She heard a thud in the dining room and slowly made her way there, only to find Rick laying on the floor, wearing a hospital gown. "Rick? Are you okay?" She questioned, dropping the rock before she moved to help him.
"Kasey..? When did you wake up from your coma?" Rick questioned, though he seemed out of it.
She ignored his question and moved to help him up on his feet. "You look like shit." She told him, attempting to lighten the mood but he didn't seem to process what she said.
"They're gone." He murmured, repeatedly, as she helped him outside. She sat him on the steps that separate the sidewalk and the walkway up to his home.
She started to check his wound when she noticed a little boy coming towards them with a shovel. "Wow, wait a second." She told him, holding up her hand when he went to swing.
"Daddy!!" The boy yelled, Rick swaying slightly beside her.
"Carl?" Rick questioned, looking over at the boy who was obviously not his boy.
She glanced back to see a man making his way towards them, shooting someone in the street. When the man reached them, he aimed his gun at them. "Hold on a second! Don't go aiming guns at people!" She hissed at him, Rick looking pale.
"Those wounds, what are they from?" The man demanded.
Kasey stared at him as if he'd grown 2 extra heads. "Sir, listen-" She started but he cut her off.
"Answer the question!" He snapped. Kasey sighed and glanced at Rick. "Gunshot wound, for me. I'd have to assume the same for him. Listen-" She was about to ask for help when Rick passed out beside her. "Shit." She cursed and moved to get up.
"Don't-" The man started but Kasey cut him off.
"Will you just shut up and help me move him?" She snapped. "I just woke up from a coma, I don't know what the hell is going on and you are aiming a gun at a detective! Now, help me. Please!"
The man, who she would later come to know as Morgan, sighed and put his gun on safety before he and his boy, Duane, picked Rick up and carried him to the home they were staying in, Kasey right behind him.
Once inside, Morgan had Kasey board up the doors once more. She did so and winced when she moved her shoulder too suddenly. She had been shot in the shoulder, the bullet had barely missed her vest. Morgan changed Rick's bandage while he was tied to the bed, and Duane kept an eye on Kasey as she moved to unwrap the bandage on her shoulder.
"How'd you get shot, lady?" Morgan questioned her when he came into the room. She glanced at him briefly before she looked at the wound on her shoulder, which was on the brink of being infected.
"Like I said, I was a detective. It comes with the job, getting shot at." She told him.
Morgan moved to help her clean the wound, having her bite a belt to keep from making too much noise. Once the wound was clean, he gave her a new bandage to wrap it in. She started to wrap it herself. "And I have a name." She told him.
"I never got it." Morgan retorted, making the girl snort softly.
"I'm Kasey. The man in that room is Rick, he's a sheriff's deputy for the county." She told him. Morgan nodded slowly and glanced at the room.
"Hey, by the way," She started, glancing at Morgan. "What month is it?" She asked, tilting her head.
He watched her. "September." He told her, making her pause.
"Damn." She murmured, rubbing her face. "I was supposed to get married in July." She huffed a humorless laugh.
"When did you get shot?" He questioned, watching her.
She looked up at him. "I got shot in June. I've been in a coma for 3 months."
