Brett watched as Marcus sped away. He didn't know what to think. His mind flipped through the outcomes of every possible situation before the scattering of shoes caught his attention. Behind him, Y/n approached him with a device on hand.
"Brett!" she said excitedly, "I got a signal! It's coming from the stadium downtown. Do you wanna come with me?"
Brett turned around. Y/n stared back at him grinning ear to ear. He felt himself force a smile, "I would follow you anywhere."
"You're the best!" she smacked the device, "it's been kind of wonky though, but I'm pretty sure that's where the signal is coming from."
"Welp, we'll just see when we get there."
...
When Y/n and Brett arrived to the stadium they were surprised to see it full of people.
"It's a Tuesday!" Y/n shouted, "shouldn't people be at work?!" she honked at the car in front of her.
Brett laughed nervously, "I think people are here for the game," he said pointing at the sign that advertised two rival baseball teams.
"Of course," she sighed in frustration, "Americans and their organized sports."
"Ha ha. Yeah...sports."
Y/n looked over at Brett, "are you okay? I feel like you've been off this whole ride."
"Yeah. Fine."
Y/n's mouth formed a thin line. She looked back at the traffic in front of her. Had Marcus said something to him? More importantly, why did she care that Brett was suddenly being weirdly cold and distant?
She thrummed her fingers against the steering wheel as her mind continued to panic about her current situation.
She looked back at him for a split second before she perked up at the sight of a parking spot.
...
Y/n waited by the concession stand as the device began to relocate where the signal was coming from. Her mind traveled back to the car ride. Her fingers began to thrum against the device as anxiety soon settled in.
"Let's get this show in the road!" she heard a familiar voice say.
She looked up and choked out a laugh. Brett had changed from his usual suit into a casual outfit. He wore a blue jersey with one of the teams names on it, some jeans, and a baseball cap to match.
"Why are you wearing that?" she laughed.
"Because I'm going to a baseball game?" he assessed her business casual outfit, "why are you still wearing that?"
"Because I'm not part of the team?"
"You look so suspicious! Isn't the whole point of this thing to be secretive and capture this guy."
"I guess you're right," she laughed, "I'll go change into something a little more casual."
Brett chuckled and watched as she made her way to the gift shop. As soon as she went inside his smile dropped. He felt guilty doubting her. Maybe everything today has been out of context. Either way, he couldn't help but nitpick her behavior.
When she returned she wore a similar outfit to Brett's. The only thing that was different was that she had tied the long jersey along her waist.
When she approached him she handed him a giant foam finger, "something told me you'd be into this kind of thing."
He smiled, "you guessed right!"
That was so nice of her! He thought. She's probably overcompensating. That little voice in his head said.
