Riley was on vacation with her parents. They were in some vacation park with little bungalows. There were many fun things to do like swimming, going to the beach, doing some fun activity the people who worked at the park had organized or just taking a walk in the hilly scenery nearby. The hills in the hilly field were covered in soft grass which was perfect to sit or lay on.

Riley was in her room. It was two hours after the family had dinner together and Riley was honestly kind of bored.

In her mind, her emotions were thinking of what to do.

"Maybe we could ask mom and dad if we can go to the pool!" Joy said excitedly.

Disgust shook her head.

"No way! Do you wanna know how gross it is in public pools?" she protested. "All those other people we don't know and their- urgh- bacteria."

"Oh, I'm sure we'll be fine!" Joy said.

"Some people literally stay in the pool while they-" Disgust didn't finish her sentence, because she felt Barf coming up. She covered her mouth and ran away.

"Uhh, isn't the pool closed at this time?" Fear interrupted Joy and Disgust's bickering.

"Hmm, maybe we could just read a book." Sadness suggested. "I mean, we did pack a few books."

"What if we go on our laptop to watch funny fails? I'm in the mood for THAT." Anger said.

"Well, whatever it is, I'm sure we'll find something to do soon enou-"

Joy got interrupted by the door of the room opening and Riley's mom coming in.

"Hey Riley, dad and I were thinking and we thought of a fun little thing to do outside." She said, sitting down on Riley's bed.

"FINALLY, something to cure our boredom!" Anger yelled.

Joy went to the console and took control.

Riley smiled.

"Oh? What is it?"

Riley's mom smiled back.

"How about we go to the hilly field and go stargazing? It's a clear night and I heard the stars are beautiful to see right now."

"Ooh, Riley loves stars!" Joy exclaimed, pressing some buttons again.

"Oh, yeah, that sounds fun." Riley said, getting up.

"Alright then, let's go. Dad is already waiting."

Riley followed her mom and the three went outside to the hilly field.

When they were there, the three got to the highest hill and sat down. Riley looked up at the sky. It was beautiful.

"Whoa..." Joy whispered. "It's so pretty!"

Everyone agreed, even Sadness. They kept watching the stars with Riley and her parents. It was a nice and peaceful moment.

Eventually, Anger, Disgust and Fear had all gone to their beds respectively because they were tired. Joy and Sadness were now alone.

"These stars make you feel so small, don't they?" Sadness said.

"Small? They make me feel big. They're so small from here." Joy replied.

"No, Joy, stars are very big, but they're really far away so they seem small. Seeing these stars makes me feel so small because then I realize how big this world is, how big the universe is, and how beautiful it is, in a way, to see that. It makes me feel peaceful but also a bit curious on what's out there." Sadness explained.

Joy was kind of touched by those words.

"Wow... that's... a beautiful way to look at it, Sadness." She said, smiling at her.

Sadness smiled back. A tiny smile.

"They also remind me of you." Sadness said after a few seconds of silence.

"Oh? How so?" Joy asked.

"They're like little lights in the dark. Just like how you always try to see the light in dark situations." Sadness replied.

Joy couldn't help but blush at those words. When she didn't say anything back, Sadness continued.

"Sometimes situations are so dark, but you're always there to keep a little positivity in it. Especially after the dark times, when Riley feels better. I honestly kind of admire that. How we can feel so good after a good cry, just because you're here, our parents are here for us, and you finally learned the importance of crying."

Joy was flattered. She smiled at Sadness.

"Well, if you weren't here, Riley wouldn't feel good either. When we were away from Headquarters, I learned that... we can't exist without each other. And neither can Riley. And I want to thank you for making me understand that."

Sadness got little tears in her eyes after hearing that. She hugged Joy.

"Oh Joy, that means a lot..." She said.

Joy hugged back. It felt nice hugging Sadness. She was in fact very huggable. The two broke the hug and went to watch the stars again. Sadness laid her hand on Joy's, which was on the console. The two both blushed as they smiled at each other.

Riley started falling asleep, her eyes closing as the screen got dark.

"Oh, she's falling asleep." Joy said, but not sounding very disappointed.

"Guess she was getting tired." Sadness said.

"Welp, I have dream duty. You can go to sleep of you want." Joy told Sadness, getting up to send the memories of the day to long term.

"No, I want to stay with you." Sadness insisted.

Joy smiled and nodded.

"Ok, then we'll just do dream duty together."

She sent the memories to long term and then went to grab two chairs so they could sit. They then spent the night doing dream duty. When there were no dreams, the two would just talk and hug a bit.

It was nice. The two also knew full well they were going to be more than just friends after this.

Yay I finished a one shot! Thanks OTP prompts generator for giving me the stargazing on a hill idea! :D
