Sadness was always known for being sad. It was obvious of course, her name was Sadness after all. Joy always tried to cheer her up, but it never worked.

One day, Sadness was being sad again. Riley just came out of school and had a pretty bad day. She got a bad grade, got called on by the teacher and kind of embarrassed herself because she wasn't paying attention, which made some kids giggle, some jerk made her trip (but luckily someone else helped her up again) and she got loads of homework to do at home. Therefore, she was feeling sad. And Sadness was too.

Sadness was at the control panel. She honestly just wanted to cry. She pressed some buttons and Riley went to her room.

Joy had seen this all and went up to Sadness.

"Sadness, I think we should do some happy things." She said. "Like read a book!"

"Riley had a miserable day, Joy, we should cry." Sadness replied.

"Yeah, she EMBARRASSED herself!" Fear agreed.

"And some jerk made us trip." Anger added.

"And we also have tons of homework to do." Disgust said.

"I know, I know, we had a bad day, but stuff like that happens! We should just do something that makes us happy to distract ourselves and still have a good time to end the day." Joy insisted.

"Joy, we're miserable, people laugh at us, and we're so- stupid and-" Sadness teared up and fell down to the floor, sobbing.

"Hey, hey, this is not- oh Sadness..." Joy sighed, sitting down next to Sadness. "Don't be sad- ugh-"

"I can't, Joy, I'm just- too sad to-" Sadness tried to say, but she could barely talk because of her sobbing.

"Well, is there anything that could make Riley happy? Think of the positive things."

Sadness looked up at Joy for a moment, face stained with tears.

"There's nothing I can think of right now that could make Riley feel happy." She said before face-planting on the floor again.

Joy thought for a second.

"Well, what makes you feel happy, then?" She then asked.

Sadness looked up at Joy again.

"Honestly, I just want a hug and cry on someone's shoulder." She said. "Crying and hugging something often makes me feel better."

Joy smiled.

"Alright then, we can hug, if that makes you feel happy. Hugs make me feel happy too! They make you feel warm and comfortable." She said happily.

"Exactly, the comfort." Sadness said, a bit of a happy tone in her voice. "Makes me feel valid."

Joy picked Sadness up from the floor and went to the couch with her, kind of dragging her along because she was too sad to walk, and then sitting down with her. Sadness immediately hugged Joy. Despite looking blue and cold, she was nice and warm and soft to the touch. Joy hugged back and they just sat there, cuddling. Sadness closed her eyes as she let her tears escape, but she wasn't sobbing as much as before. She relished in Joy's warmth. Despite Joy looking pretty skinny and spiky, she too, was huggable and warm. Her glow illuminated Sadness' face nicely, giving it a slight yellow glow. Eventually the two decided to lay down for more comfort.

Sadness' sobs and breath eventually calmed down and Sadness just laid there calmly. Joy noticed and smiled again.

"You feeling better?" She asked.

Sadness nodded.

"Yeah, thank you, Joy." She said.

Joy wanted to get up, but Sadness stopped her.

"Can we stay like this for a bit longer? You feel so nice and warm. You're pretty huggable."

Joy laid down again and pulled Sadness closer.

"Well, you're pretty huggable yourself so I suppose we could hug a little while longer." She replied.

Sadness smiled and rested her head on Joy's chest. She blushed a bit when she heard Joy's heartbeat. She was also intrigued; she didn't know emotions had heart beats. Joy blushed a bit at Sadness' smile.

"Your smile's pretty cute." She told Sadness.

Sadness blushed even more.

"You really think so?"

Joy nodded.

"I know so."

Sadness couldn't help but smile more.

"Heh, thanks!" She said.

"You're welcome." Joy smiled at Sadness.

The two kept cuddling like that.

Meanwhile Fear, Anger and Disgust were watching them.

"They have pretty gay vibes." Disgust said.

"Yeah, they are pretty cute." Fear agreed.

Anger nodded.

"Yeah, they are, but I think they should eventually go back to their jobs." He said.

That evening, when Riley went to sleep (Joy and Sadness had gone back to their jobs), Sadness had dream duty. Joy offered to stay with her. The two went to cuddle on the couch again (which they moved so they could see the screen). Sadness looked at Joy.

"Thank you for listening to me and hugging me. I know it might not seem like much to you, but for me it helped a ton." She said.

Joy looked back at Sadness.

"You're welcome." She said.

She then gave Sadness a quick kiss on the forehead, making the other girl blush madly. She giggled as a soft blush also appeared on her cheeks. The two just stared at each other for a bit until the screen lit up. Sadness was the first one to look.

"Joy, the dream's starting." She said.

Joy saw it.

"Well, let's see what this dream has in store for us." She said happily.

The two sat up again and went to watch the dream. Let's just say that Sadness went to Joy way more often after their hugging session.
