1 year and five months earlier...
After hours of labor, she was finally home and Rachel took the opportunity to sleep as much as she could when the baby was also asleep and/or didn't need to be breastfed once the euphoria of meeting Emma passed. However, almost a week later she was still feeling exhausted and wondered if at some point that feeling would pass.
She missed having any close friends with children to talk to about it so she decided she would talk to Carol, since she, Susan and Ben were finally going to meet Emma. Ross prepared breakfast for her, tidied up the house and groomed Emma while she quietly took a shower trying not to hear imaginary cries. She couldn't deny that he was being a great father and had even agreed not to date anyone during this period and not to bring up the embarrassing moment when she had accepted a non-existent marriage proposal from Joey.
"You look beautiful," he said as she left the room still wearing a dress from when she was pregnant because they were the only clothes that still fit her.
"You say that because it's the first time in a week that you see me without pajamas and with my hair done," she joked.
"No. I think maternity looks good on you," he gave her a discreet smile and the two of them had a brief moment before the intercom rang.
Emma was sleeping peacefully in her stroller, so they opened the door before they rang the bell to avoid the risk of waking her. Getting that little girl to sleep was almost like running a marathon.
"Thanks for the visit," Rachel said as soon as the two of them entered with the boy.
"We finally got to meet Ben's little sister. We know how tense the first week is and we thought it best to wait a little," Carol commented, handing a gift package to Rachel, who kept it to open it later.
"You have no idea. I mean, you do," agreed Ross. - Are you looking forward to meeting your sister, Ben?
"I brought this for her," commented the boy, holding a teddy bear that looked worn.
"She'll love it, I'm sure," assured Rachel.
"He wanted to give her his favorite bear when he was a baby," Susan explained.
"Oh, how sweet. I'm sure you'll be a great big brother," said Rachel, holding back tears as she was still more sensitive than usual. Everyone was standing around the crib admiring the baby when Susan let out a shout:
"She is beautiful. She looks nothing like Ross, of course," she teased, and he grimaced, but added:
"It's hard, but unfortunately I have to agree with Susan. She looks just like Rachel," he gave his daughter's mother a visibly impassioned look.
"I don't think she looks like anyone yet," Ben said after analyzing the sleeping baby. "She is so small. I was small like that too?" - he commented surprised.
"Yes, you were," his parents agreed.
"So you mean that now you guys aren't taking a break anymore? - he asked, looking at Rachel and Ross.
"Ben, this is a grown up business," criticized Susan, a little embarrassed for her son. - "Kids..."
"We weren't taking a break, Ben, but that's one of the reasons your father and I aren't together, we just have your little sister together, okay?"
"We were taking a break, yes, but that doesn't matter now."
"So you are raising the baby together, living together, but not together?" - asked Susan.
