I woke up with a start, rushing to get dressed and get my things together.

Why, you may ask? Because it was finally the day that I would receive my starter pokémon, and begin my journey across kanto!

Rushing down the stairs, I lunged out the door. My feet carried me to professor Oak's lab, where I knocked on the door. "Oh, good to see you're here." Oak greeted. "Blue and Red have been waiting."

"Red fell down the stairs." I heard blue snark. "Did not!" Red retorted.

I was led to a table where three pokéballs rested, my childhood friends stood before it. "She finally arrives, good to see you woke up on time." Blue teased, snickering when I stuck my tongue out at him.

"Are you excited, red? You're probably the most interested in Pokémon out of us three." I mused, standing next to the brunette. He nodded. "A little nervous, though." He mumbled.

"That's fine, I'm kinda scared too." I smiled. "I've never traveled so far, or been away from home for so long." Red nodded at my confession.

"Who needs to be nervous, you've got the future champion to protect you." Blue boasted, leaning on my shoulder with his elbow. "Yeah, I'll protect her." Red responded as he put his hand on my other shoulder.

The two boys gave each other a fierce glare as I sweatdropped.

"Alright, time for you all to meet the Pokémon that will help you start your journey, choose wisely." Oak said, before releasing the Pokémon from the table.

I recognized them, as charmander sniffed about, squirtle examining the room as bulbasaur yawned. "They're so cute!" I gushed, crouching to look at the Pokémon better.

Bulbasaur waddled over, coming to examine me carefully. "It looks like bulbasaur likes you." Oak watched the grass starter as it allowed me to pet it softly. I nodded, smiling.

Red had chosen charmander, blue choosing squirtle. I didn't mind though, having already chosen bulbasaur myself. "I'd suggest you three stop at home before you leave, and be safe out there." Oak said, handing us our Pokédexes so we could send info back to him.

We parted ways and walked to our homes, where I promptly showed my parent my newly acquired starter.

"How darling." My parent smiled, releasing me from a hug. "You take good care of y/n, okay bulbasaur?" The pokémon growled in affirmation, before we set out towards route one.

Each equipped with our newly-developed Pokédex, I stood for a moment in thought. Blue and Red were definitely competing for both the title of champion and to be the first to complete their dex. Stood still, I thought to myself.

What did I want to do?

I hadn't thought so far ahead, too caught up in the excitement of receiving my first Pokémon. With the two boys competing for both achievements, it left me with my own crisis; figure out what to do next.

Blue had rushed off, wanting a head-start. This left me and red at the entrance of route one.

"You haven't gone anywhere yet?" A voice dragged me from my thoughts. I look up to see red beside me, looking confused. "Yeah..." I sighed. "I envy you and blue."

"Why's that?" Red tilted his head.

"Because you both know what you're going to do with yourselves... I have no idea." I breathed, turning to face the route.

Red and I lingered in silence for a moment, before he spoke up. "You can come with charmander and I." He suggested.

I turned back to the brunette. "You really mean it?" I asked. He nodded, determined as always. "Yeah, you're sure to find your passion along the way!"

...

Lunging, I pulled my childhood friend into a hug.

"Thanks, red. I appreciate it, really."

I didn't see his face fluster, nor acknowledge his stutter.

"A-anytime.."
