Red had ducked behind a tree, tucking me behind him. "What is it?" I asked. "A wild pidgey.. charmander, go for it!" He sent out charmander, while I watched, bulbasaur tucked into my arms.
The wild pidgey kicked up a gust, stunning charmander. "Wait, hold on!" Red tried throwing a pokéball, missing.
The ball clattered to the ground.
Red examined his Pokédex, sighing. "Great, the datas only recorded if I catch it." He mumbled, charmander making a noise of agreement.
Motion in the long grass caught my attention. "We have company." I said, bulbasaur jumping from my arms into a defensive position.
"I got this, charmander, growl!" Red sent forth the fire type, which released a growl that stunned the wild ratatta. "Scratch!" Charmander rushed forward, swiping at the rat.
It jumped to dodge, smacked by a pokéball midair. The Pokémon dissapeared inside, ball clattering to the ground.
Red checked his Pokédex, sure enough the data was there.
He smiled. "That's so cool!" I patted him on the back as the boy beamed with pride. "Good job, red!"

After having caught more Pokémon than I can count, almost accidentally stealing some kid's Pokémon too, red and I began to search for a wild nidoran.
We ended up at viridian city, stopping to see the sign when a voice piped up.
"You made it here quicker than I thought you would." Blue approached. "You're pretty slow.. so I thought it would take a lot more time for you to figure out how to get here." He taunted red.
"Say, has your Pokémon got any stronger yet?" Blue asked. I shook my head at his antics.
"My goal isn't to make my Pokémon stronger, all I really wanna do is complete the Pokédex." Red replied. "Yeah, I get it. But to complete the Pokédex sometimes you'll have to battle strong Pokémon, right?" Blue retorts. "Well at least you have a good excuse to escape from battle if you wimp out."
"What did you say?!" Red frowned, that struck a nerve. I sighed, running a hand down my face and walking away from the two.
They're still the same as when we were kids, rivals from diapers.
And somehow, I always was caught up in the middle of their squabbles.
---
I found a café in viridian city, stopping to get some food after I'd finished shopping with the money we'd gotten from trainer battles along the way. Red had gone through most of his pokéballs, and a good portion of the other supplies.
Might as well stock up, better safe than sorry.
Eventually, I saw a familiar figure looking around. I paid for my food, before exiting. Red's eyes glimmered when he saw me approach, before his face fell.
"You look upset, what's wrong?" I asked, holding my shopping bag in one hand, my other hand was wrapped up in two vines courtesy of bulbasaur.
"I'm just fine, don't worry." Red smiled. I could tell something had thrown him off his rhythm, but I sighed and nodded. "Well if anything ever comes up, you can talk to me about it." I said.
He nodded. "Cmon, if you wanna get to pewter city we should set off." I said. "Wait- I was going to get some things from the mart.." he said. I smiled, lifting the shopping bag into his line of sight.
"I already did."
