Year roughly 2923-

Wylow walked through the silent streets, her footsteps muffled by the city vents blowing musty air. Fatigue clung to her like a heavy cloak, the bruises on her small arms a visible testament to rigorous training sessions with Jace Kinton, her personal guard. Unfortunately her lesson was cut short today. Jace was was attending a mandatory meeting. Alas- she found herself walking the streets alone.

Old flickering lights lined the streets keeping the city lit from utter darkness. Rusty pipes, caked with sludge, lined the streets, serving as silent witnesses to a forgotten era. The usual buzz of life was replaced by an eerie silence. Though, in her opinion the normal chatter and clatter of commerce didn't do much for the city anyway. The city was nothing if not worn down.

She often wondered how the city had looked in its heyday. But, it wasn't the only nor the worst thing rotting from the inside out. The rich and powerful stayed in the upper city close to the Solar Simulator, while the rest were pushed to the dark edges of the city.

While she was fortunate to live in the safe, well-lit inner city with her uncle Vaughn, many people in the vast city were fighting for light and warmth. Her uncle despite being in the military also hated the division throughout the city. He was happy in solitude, Wylow swore if it weren't for her safety he would prefer living on the city edge.

Wylow pondered what was happening in the meeting today. Though her uncle specifically told her not to attend, she had a deep desire welled up within her, a yearning for President Sabine to announce a solution for the city's power shortages. It was the only logical reason to call an open council meeting so suddenly. And with most of the city in attendance, she had a lot of time to consider what would happen.

Hushed murmurs from a nearby alley caught her attention. She slowed her steps, slipping behind an old building to listen. Unlike everyone she knew, who would be at today's meeting, why would anyone be having a secretive conversation in the backstreets at the edge of the city?

"He's siphoning energy from the Solar Simulator," she recognized the voice as Arik. His voice was laced with urgency and a tinge of fear.

She peeked past the wall she was hiding behind, catching sight of Arik. Greasy strands of hair clung to his forehead, highlighting the unease etched across his face. The city knew Arik as a deceitful soldier carrying out the president's orders in exchange for extra canned food rations.

A familiar chuckle escaped the lips of the other man... her childhood friend, Thoran. "Come on, Arik," Thoran scoffed, his tone carrying a hint of amusement. "The 'Undying King' and his quest for eternal life? It's all just tales spun to scare children." As he spoke, his eyes twinkled with disbelief, revealing the lack of trust he held towards Arik's beliefs. It left her wondering why Thoran engaged in conversation with him at all.

Arik leaned forward, his narrowed eyes locked on Thoran. "It's not just a story. There's something more sinister happening. I've seen things, heard whispers. The power outages aren't random, things are... dangerous. If you help me, I'll help you."
