"Then suddenly lightning fell on you and Boom!" Reynolds narrated. Alice had a grief stricken look on her face.

"Due to the explosion I, along with the tree I was holding onto flew away." He paused to see my reaction. Realising I was still wearing my apathetic expression, he continued.

"After that I lost consciousness. When i woke up, I did not know how much time had past. My body felt cold and weak. That was when I realised," Reynolds paused for a dramatic effect. "There was a tree on top of me!" Alice gasped.

'Stop with the drama and just get on with your story, would you?' I thought but I didn't voice them for obvious reasons.

"But worry not, your strong father lifted the tree on top of him easily!" Reynolds flexed his biceps.

'Is that supposed to be an impressive feat in the world of magic?'

"You shouldn't do that, honey." Alice said. "Your arm isn't healed yet."

She was right. Reynolds was practically dressed up in bandages like a mummy. I was in a similar condition myself, so I refrained from moving.

He scratched the back of his head, "Oh, I forgot."

"How can you forget that your arm is broken." Alice sighed.

"Anyways, back to the story." He swirched back to storyteller mode. "I saw a crater stretching for miles. In the middle of it was a kid covered in blood and tatters. Arthur."

Alice was horrified. Her eyes widened and she covered her wide open mouth with her hands.

Reynolds looked towards me. "Fortunately, your heart was still beating. But you were in a critical condition. I was afraid that if you were left untreated, you would..." He reconsidered his words. "I was afraid something bad would happen to you."

"Now here I was, in the middle of the woods. Far away from town with nothing but barren land and uprooted trees surrounding me for miles. I was injured badly myself and it was only a matter of time before I fainted."

"But I held on. For my son's unconscious body was in my hands. And he needed treatment immediately. I took the most logical step in that situation. I carried your body on my back and ran as fast as I could in my injured state."

For the first time in a while, my facial expression changed. My eyebrows narrowed in confusion. "That wasn't the most logical step to take in that situation. You should have prioritised yourself." My voice cracked a little in between as I was silent for a long time.

Reynold's eyes drooped low and he looked at me with a sad but loving expression. "It was. For me."

"A piece of my heart resides inside you before yours was even formed. Saving you means saving myself."

"In a life or death situation, if only one of us could survive, I would gladly sacrifice myself to let you live on. That is logical priority for me."

I could say nothing in response. His logic was illogical. Nothing he said made sense or was prudent. One should always prioritise himself during a critical life or death situation. That is the natural instinct. So why would he- why did he... ?

After a long pause the only words I managed to voice out were, "Thank you... father."

Upon hearing my words, Reynolds had a huge grin on his face and Alice's eyes went wide. Their reactions were natural.

This was the first time I called Reynolds father after all.
