Camila shot awake shaking like a leaf with sweat glistening her skin. Her heart was shatteringfrom the vision she'd just had, and enough reality came into focus for her to hear the screaming of the villagers that was secondly joined by the shouts and howls from the warrior Alphas. Lauran woke up with a gasp from the sound and scrambled to get out of bed.
"Lauran," Camila tried to say, but it came out as more of a broken whisper.
"Shit!" Lauran shouted, throwing clothing into the air to try and locate her dagger. "Camila, stayhere baby. I'll be close by, okay? If even one of these mother fuckers gets near you, I'll take themdown. You'll be safe, I promise," she said quickly, finally finding her weapon and moving tocharge into battle.
"Lauranna!" Camila shouted uncharacteristically loudly, causing her mate to stop at the entrance and turn her head to look at her in surprise.
The Alpha needed to join the fight right now, but when she took one glance at Camila'sexpression, she instantly dropped her weapon and stumbled forward slightly, lungs tightening in dread. She knew that look. She felt what it meant. It was a face of fear tinged with hopelessdespair, but she couldn't believe it. "No we don't," she denied with shaky confidence.Camila's eyes watered and she grasped her necklaces to try and ground herself to something.
"It's us," she choked out through the tears that had inevitably begun falling. Lauran was furiously shaking her head and defensively holding her hands up like the words were attacking her. "No!" she cried. "No, no, no, it can't-"
"I'm sorry, I'm so sorry, we were perfect, L. We were everything, I love you so much," Camilawailed, desperately reaching out for her Alpha. Lauran cleared the distance between them in a leap, falling onto her knees and smashing her Omega against her body, digging her nails into Camila's back. "Cami, no. Not you, baby. Fate can't take you from me, I can't... Is there nothing that can be done? Tell me! Tell me we can make it out of this," the Alpha begged, pulling back and shaking her mate's shoulders like a solution might fall out of her hair.Camila only took her Alpha's hands from her arms and held them in her own, pressing themagainst her heart. "It's set," she said almost imperceptibly, locking eyes with her now crying mate."I knew - I knew it was. This whole time. But I didn't know it was us, I swear.""Stop it!" Lauran ordered, grabbing her Omega's face in both hands and hitting their foreheadstogether. "I can't... do this, Mika. You can't ask me to do this," the Alpha whimpered intoCamila's face.A pained sob wracked through Camila's throat and she threw her arms around Lauran's back, squeezing her as hard as she could. "I'm so sorry," she repeated."But... We had a future. A life, we were gonna have pups, we were-""No, I don't think we ever were, Lauran. This was always it, but I could never see. I didn'tknow," she depressingly argued."Camila, please-""It's okay, though. Baby, it's okay," Camila hushed, fiercely connecting their lips and touchingevery part of her Alpha she could reach. "We'll see each other on the other side, my preciousmate. I promise. We're gonna be together forever, Lauranna," the Omega stated plainly andsurely.Lauran knew she was telling the truth and it calmed her a fraction, but even knowing the futurecontained eternal serenity somehow did not do much to undermine the present's tragedy. "But Ican't watch you die, baby. I can't," the Alpha pushed through a brokenhearted whine, droppingher head onto her mate's shoulder.
"You have to let me go first, Lauran. You have to. I can't do this without you," Camila heaved between sobbing gasps for air, raising her Alpha's head and begging into her emerald eyes.
Lauran knocked Camila on her back, hovering above her and gently caressing her face with herknuckles, taking in all of her beloved's stunning features. She lowered her head and cried into her Omega's neck, extending her canines and sinking them into her bond mark. When they were both calmer, she rolled them to lay on their sides, entangling every limb possible and clinging with them desperately."Okay, Mika," the Alpha sniffed, continuously petting Camila's face and tucking her mate's hairbehind her ear for her just like the Omega always does. Lauran loved it when she did that. "I'll behere until the end. I promise."
