"Why?" She stepped back.
"I don't know. It's the way I've always lived." He spread his arms in a helpless shrug. "I've never had a choice."
"But... You still chose to tell me?! Why? It makes no sense. You've known me for what? Six hours?"
"Yeah..." Kraken looked down sheepishly. "I don't know. I've just never told anyone for thirteen years. I had too."
"Why me?"
"You're one of the only people I know."
"No. I don't want to deal with your drama." She walked away, shaking her head to clear her mind. He followed her.
"Phoenix..."
"No. Leave me alone." She sped up, heading to her room. "Stop following me."
"Please don't leave." He stopped and looked after her helplessly, sighing.
She walked out of earshot, opening the door to her room. It was spacious, but there were three beds, which made her suspect that she would be rooming with two other girls. Phoenix sighed, sitting on her bed and putting her head in her hands. It was too much, Kraken had confirmed her suspicions. He was a hybrid, who were feared because of their rarity and power. He was also one of her only friends.
"Umph." She flopped backwards, her head spinning. "I knew something was different, but I hoped... I hoped it wasn't that. I mean, he-" She was interrupted by the door opening. Dryad walked in.
"Hey Phoenix! We get to room together!"
"I noticed." Phoenix rolled over onto her stomach. "I explored the center."
"Find out anything cool?" Dryad asked, walking over to one of the other beds and putting her stuff down.
Phoenix gasped, then shook her head. "Uh, no, it was pretty boring."
"Too bad. Wilde and I had a good talk while you were gone. He's pretty funny actually."
"Ooo." Phoenix sat up.
"No. Don't go there."
"Too late! He is kinda cute though... I saw Kraken while I was exploring."
"Oh, did you?" Dryad sat down on her bed.
"Yeah, so we walked together for a while." Phoenix looked down, hoping Dryad wouldn't notice the mingled emotions in her voice.
"Okay, cool. I'm kinda tired, so I'm gonna get a shower and go to bed." Dryad gathered her belongings and stood up.
"Okay. I may or may not be asleep when you get back."
Phoenix rolled onto her back again and looked up at the ceiling. She was confused by everything and need time to process. Her head was spinning, thoughts whirling faster and faster, until finally she fell asleep.
