A Lethal Mistake

The warehouse was bustling with a dozen people working. Several were around the television, watching the news and reading articles to come up with leads on potential scores. A couple were working on repainting the invisible jet. But Morgan was working on sorting through the documents they had just stolen from Alex's base.

About a month ago, Chad had managed to arrest Morgan and confiscated a briefcase full of maps for adventures that they had been working on decoding. Morgan had planned on stealing them back when Alex raided the Fairness association headquarters and stolen the maps among other things.

Now, Morgan was sifting through to find that other documents had been mixed in, including information that could be used as blackmail for several heroes. "Oh, this is just too sweet." They said, as they read through each page.

"Boss."

Morgan glanced up curiously at the woman who approached them.

"You might want to see this. The Chadster's on the news."

Morgan just rolled their eyes and went back to their work. "No thanks, Steph." They grumbled. "I'm not interested in watching that pompous asshole get any more awards."

Steph cleared her throat, looking back at the television. "He's in a fight, Boss. With-"

"Unless the fucker is dying, I'm not interested." Morgan interrupted.

"Boss... He's fighting Alex."

Morgan froze at the words, green eyes widening at the realization. He turned, looking at the screen as the camera followed Chad getting thrown into the air and then punched towards the ground. Alex was clearly playing with him like a cat with a mouse.

Morgan stood slowly, moving to the screen as the 'fight' continued. Sure, Chad tried, but there was no chance he was going to survive this.

The reporter droned on, at this point seeming almost numb to Alex's violence. "According to an anonymous source, the villain was heard saying 'this is what happens when you try to steal from me'"

The reporter's words hit Morgan like a ton of bricks as they glanced over at the jet. This was their fault... Alex thought it was Chad stealing from them because of the jet...

Morgan felt sick to their stomach as they looked back to the beating, realizing they were about to watch their own brother die because of them... Unless...

"Everyone... Stop what you're doing... and go home, now." Morgan said, feeling a dozen confused gazes turn to them. The room went quiet save for the sound of the news.

"Why?" One henchmen asked, though most were slowly starting to obey.

Morgan took a deep breath. "Because I'm about to make a lethal mistake. Now get out of here."

No one asked any more questions as they all rushed to leave. Whatever their boss was doing, they knew better than to stick around.

Morgan stared at the screen, preparing to snap as their henchmen fled. This was stupid... why were they doing this? The bastard deserved it... but still, the sight of the hero slumping after being thrown into a wall tore at their bleeding heart. Alex was pulling back to land a killing punch when-

SNAP

Morgan flinched back as the villain appeared before them, and they raised their arms in a futile attempt to defend themselves.

Alex jerked back at the sudden change of scenery, knocking the TV over and breaking it on the floor. "What the fuck?" he demanded, struggling to get his bearings as he looked around the warehouse. Finally, his golden gaze landed on the only other person in the room. "Who are you? And where am I?" he demanded as Morgan slowly lowered their arms to reveal a nervous smile.
