Kori's POV

__________

I looked up at his face. He was wearing sunglasses... indoors? He looked very mysterious. But there was something about him... I was staring at him, and he was staring back. My cheeks flushed. He pulled me up and picked up my backpack off the floor. The boy next to him started to speak.

"Ohmygod, are you okay?! Sorry about that, I get distracted like super easily and-" His friend, the one that caught me, interrupted him.

"Sorry about him, I hope you're okay. Here's your backpack." He handed me my bag. At this point, I was a little frantic. I did not know what I was feeling inside. All that came out of me was a nervous laugh.

"Uh... hahaa..." My cheeks were bright red. A puzzled look appeared on both of their faces. "Thank you!" I said, a little too loudly, and scurried away. That was very embarrassing! I did not even introduce myself. I hoped that they did not think I was rude.

I could not let this get to me. A few seconds after the incident, I found Donna standing at her locker, speaking to another girl. She also had black hair, with a white top, purple skirt, and black converse. She looked so cool! I walked over.

"Oh hey Kori!" Said Donna.

"Hello!" I replied, with a smile. The other girl smiled too.

"Kori, this is Zatanna. She's a sophomore."

"Nice to meet you! You can call me Zee. I love your outfit. Are you new here?" Zatanna said.

"It is nice to meet you too! I am new, yes, and I love your top!" I replied. Zee seemed very sweet! Meeting her made me forget about the last few minutes.

"Kori, can I see your schedule? We might have some of the same classes." Donna asked. I nodded as I pulled out my schedule, and all three of us looked over it together.

Donna carefully inspected the sheet of paper. "Cool! We have PE and Psych together. Mr. Stewart is really nice, but watch out for Mr. Dayton. He can be an asshole at times." She said, and I smiled.

"Thank you for the tips!" I said. Just then, the bell rang. The hallways were emptying out as everyone trudged to their homeroom classes. Luckily, I knew where mine was, and it was not far. When I walked in, it was merely a regular classroom with a teacher standing in the front. Most of the seats were still empty, so I took a random spot in a row near the back. More people walked in, all busy talking to their friends. I felt a bit lonely.

A girl with a blonde ponytail sat next to me. She did not look as welcoming as Donna or Zee, so I did not know whether to greet her or stay quiet. I believe she could sense me looking at her, because she turned to face me.

"I haven't seen you before." The girl said. I could not tell if she was mean or just serious in nature.

"Hi! My name is Kori. What is your name?" I said, sheepishly. She did not look amused.

"Artemis." She said. Artemis is a beautiful name! Artemis turned back to the front of the classroom, indicating that she did not wish to speak anymore. Class then began. Mr. Stewart welcomed us and gave the class information on the new school year. After homeroom, I went to my first period class, chemistry.

When I walked in, there were lab tables and equipment all around. I looked up at the board and noticed a... seating chart. Everyone was put into a pair, and that person would be your lab partner for the semester. How exciting! I was at table two with... Wallace West. I walked over to my table. Wallace was not there yet. Class began, and I was still alone at our table. Three minutes later, the door slammed open. Everyone turned around to see an exasperated redhead. But wait- Oh no! I knew him, he was the boy who tripped me.

"Mr. West, I expect you to be in class at 8:15. As the school's fastest runner, you seem to be too slow to arrive on time." Dr. Isley said, with annoyance in her voice.

"I know doc- (gasp) I didn't mean (gasp) to-"

"Have a seat at table two." That was my table! He was Wallace West! Wallace slowly nodded as the rest of the class laughed. Dr. Isley continued on with her lesson, but I was too focused on Wallace to pay attention.

When he saw me, his face lit up with surprise. He very obviously remembered me. Wallace sat down, and I tried my best not to look at him.

"Hey, I'm Wally. Sorry about earlier, I didn't mean to trip you." He whispered. I gave him a small smile.

"Hello Wally, I am Kori. I would also like to apologize for running away from you and your friend. It is nice to meet you!" I whispered back. This made me feel better about everything.

"You're not from Jump City, are you? I've never seen you before."

"I was born here, but I lived in Australia for most of my life. I moved back to America one month ago." Wallace looked surprised. Or maybe that was just his resting face, I could not tell anymore.

"Sweet! Why'd you move back?" My heart dropped. I was not ready to share that information with anybody yet.

"My sister got a job here." I replied. She did not get a job here.

Before Wally could reply, we were shushed by Dr. Isley. We were silent for the rest of the period. While we were packing up, he said farewell to me and told me that he was glad that there were no hard feelings.

French class was boring. An old friend of mine taught me French, so I already knew the language. One boy kept giving me looks throughout the class though. He had a scar on his face in the shape of an X. I wondered who he was.

In Physical Education, I stayed near Donna the entire time. She introduced me to more of her friends! I tried my best to remember all of their names. I believe they were Kara, Sarah, Kole, and Karen. Karen was very nice, and I talked to her a lot. She asked me about Australia, my hobbies, if I had a boyfriend, and more. Karen told me that she was dating Victor Stone, a popular football player. I did not know who he was, but Karen spoke very fondly of him, so he must have been nice.

Karen and I hit it off so well that she invited me to sit with Victor and her other friends at lunch. Donna said that she would sit with Karen too. Of course I said yes to her offer!

Donna and Karen led me to their lunch spot, two benches outside that were under a shady tree. I was very excited to sit with them, but when we reached the tables, that's when I saw him...

It was Wallace's friend from earlier!
