Dinner at Azalea's house is so different compared to dinner with my aunt, it's all so lively compared to the awkward tension that looms above me and my aunt before she takes up a phone call.
I absentmindedly form my garlic fried rice in a circle. My mind wanders to how rigid Azalea's posture became, how her eyes widened. Everything about her screaming at me to refuse, but refusing would be impolite wouldn't it? After I'm going to be dating, fake dating their daughter. The least I could do is accept their miniscule invitation to dinner.
I feel a prickling sensation, the chill you get when you know when someone is looking at you. I look to see Azalea, glaring daggers at me. She makes a very subtle show of motioning her fork in a way that's telling me to eat. I shove a forkful of garlic fried rice in my mouth.
Good would be an understatement the rice is a fucking godsend, I quickly devour three plates. Her mom looks ecstatic at my show of adoration for her cooking. She fawns over how lovely and healthy I am before giving me a second, and then a third.
"How'd you two meet?" I ask Azalea's dad while settling onto a corner of the couch, making sure to not get too comfortable. I don't want them to think that I don't have any manners.
Azalea's eyes go from looking like she wants to set her house on fire to something like panic. "Dad." she hisses.
"Oh yes," he coughs. "I met your, Lea's mom at university in japan"
"I fell in love with her the moment I saw her." His voice takes on a dreamy tone.
I glance at Azalea, and all the color has drained from her face, and I can't help, but crack a smile.
"Oh stop it, you're so generous." Her mom laughs while lighting, shoving her elbow into his hand.
Azalea looks like she wants to die right there, and it takes me all my willpower to not laugh. And I don't mean one of those short, curt laughs, I mean a whole laughing fit.
"Mom, dad, me and Natalie are going to go to my room!" Azalea says quickly before grabbing me by the hand and leading me upstairs.
Well this is going to be quite a ride.
