So I know this is kind of a stupid challenge of intelligence, but I really couldn't think of anything else, so I just went with what was in the original.
A boy about their age in bright red- and- silver clothing stood in front of the gate with a sword.
Shelby approached him. "We must deliver a message to Queen Lizzie of Oceana. May we pass?"
"No," the guard told her.
Shelby stood taller, growing in authority. "I am Princess Shelby of Evermore. Behind me I have my most loyal knight and my brother, Prince Scott. I have a message for Queen Lizzie. You will let us pass."
Most loyal knight? Katherine thought, touched that Shelby had referred to her as such.
"No!" The guard said, clearly panicking a little. "I can't, Your Highness! I really can't! I'm sorry!"
"Why can't you?" Shelby asked.
"Because I can't!" The guard yelped. "Look!" Turning to the gate, he pushed against it hard, throwing his whole weight against the wood. Panting, he turned back to them. "See?"
"Maybe if we all try together," Scott suggested.
All of them pressed against the gate. It creaked, but didn't open.
"Is it locked?" Katherine asked. "Is there another way to get past? A spot where we can climb the wall?"
"Nope," The guard said. "No lock. And no place to climb the wall, either!"
"What's your name?" Shelby asked.
"Sausage," the guard told her. "Um, I mean, Sausage, Your Highness."
"You can call me Shelby," Shelby laughed. "So, Sausage, you've never seen anyone open it? Ever?"
"No," Sausage admitted. "Sorry. But...sorry if this is rude, but if you're the prince and princess, why don't you have horses? I have, actually, seen horses jump the wall. That's usually what people do to get over. Or they send a bird. Doesn't your kingdom train owls?"
"We do have messenger birds," Shelby said. "But we have a custom that before someone can become a ruler, they have to go on a quest. This is mine." Her tone warned the guard not to ask any more questions.
"Can't open the gate," Katherine muttered. Something about this seemed strange. "No lock...challenge of Intelligence...no luck pushing..." A thought struck her. "Hey, Sausage? Have you tried pulling the Gate open?"
"Well...no," Sausage admitted. "It never occurred to me."
"Then let's try it."
Grabbing the handles of the gate, Katherine, Scott, Shelby, and Sausage pulled as hard as they could.
With a resounding creeeaaak, the Gate swung open.
